I think the offer Tyus got from Memphis was too much for the Wolves to match. But I think the Wolves should have offered more than they did. I suspect we could have gotten Tyus to re-sign for 4 years $20 million guaranteed (about $5 million per year). But Rosas appears to have a long-range plan. We don't really know what that is right now, but it appears that Tyus doesn't fit well with that plan.

Proud of Rosas for that offer, if true. Excellent gauge of player value to monetary worth. The handling of Tyus on his end increases my confidence in him despite not retaining the player in question.

We know what the Wolves offered. We don't know when in the process that offer came and we don't know what kind of counter offer Tyus and his agent gave them. Would Rosas have been willing to settle on something you suggested? We don't know but I would guess he might. They could have even front loaded the deal. Depending on when that offer was extended I don't blame Tyus for feeling a bit unhappy with that considering the market. Might as well take the qualifying offer over that deal and head to FA next year. Like I've said before the way things played out this season with PGs didn't go well for the Wolves.
Ultimately Rosas valued him as a backup PG and not a premium one. Is Corey Joseph worth what he got paid? He might for the Kings. They have hurt themselves in the past for overpaying for vets but that's deep roster now and Joseph could be on a nice 2nd unit that will have shooting around him and he is a guy that's played quite a bit in the playoffs. A year from now will we have wanted to pay Tyus X amount of dollars or a more legit starter or even a vet guy possibly the same money Tyus just got? What if PG salaries aren't as strong next year? What if we draft a PG of the future and Teague has a solid season loves the organization (he could get traded in season) and all that and signs a short term deal for Tyus money (from Memphis) to be a transition guy? I'm not saying that happens or I even want it to happen but there are a lot of possibilities. Good organizations both pay good backups and find ways to get cheaper worthwhile players in those roles. Napier is an example of the later.
Wait, we think Tyus would have turned down 3yr-$24M to accept a 4yr-$20M offer from Wolves? On what planet does this make sense? Oh, I get he has ties here. But that is leaving at least $8-10M on the table ($4M this contract, and whatever he would get that 4th year down the road). For a backup player like Tyus, there is just no way he was doing that deal. This contract is critical for him, as we saw other players his caliber getting $2-3M this FA period. If he doesn't improve A TON over next 3 seasons, he could be looking at same thing.

If we can discern patterns after this much time, the plan appears to be to avoid filling up the cap with middling players. There always seem to be solid guys who can contribute for around the minimum. Rose last year for example. If we can rid the roster of the 'Dieng style' contracts and only pay up for star caliber players, we can fill the roster with Vonleh style contracts. Even if they're not long term answers, they're value signings and it allows us the chance to have more flexibility to lock in the key pieces around Towns. Tyus may have helped us as a backup point guard. But having multiple mid-level talents on the roster with those sort of contracts appears the best way to limit a teams ability to make moves and genuinely build something.

Earth to Hicks - You sign him before he gets a qualifying offer. It's a matter of timing. You sign him to 4 years $20 million before the Memphis offer and he'd likely take it with no other offers on the table. Then he's off the market. $4 million less in guaranteed money to play for a head coach he's close to in his home town where he can be close to his mom who has cancer. That makes sense on planet earth.

You don't take 5 million if you think you're worth 9. He would have rejected that.

Yeah I think even if we offered that as the first call on FA he wouldn't have taken that deal. He could have just played for the qualifying offer and become an UFA and only had to make 16.3 million the next 3 years to equal that offer. Other PGs deals came in quick! Thinking about it more I honestly don't think we had a chance at getting him for even a more reasonable 4 years 25 million if we had offered it right away. Rosas valued him as a backup not a future starter. Not offering him a contract earlier makes sense because Tyus may have wanted to see what other opportunities were out there and the Wolves likely understood that. For example if we signed Russell, Tyus may have had no interest in even coming back. Tyus left the organization because he got paid A LOT more. He did that even though this franchise has NOBODY under contract at PG for the 2020-2021 season.
