We needed perimeter shooters last season and Redick signed with the Clippers. Mayo is a head case. So it was Martin by default. We need his shooting this season too, which is why I see him starting under Flip.
I'd like to know if you have any more information to share. I ask because are you are telling me if we had signed Mayo (thanks goodness we didn't) it would been for Adelman's system? Flip targeted shooting last offseason as the biggest need for improvement which was obvious to just about anyone. Sure Martin played and fit into Adelman's system whiich is probably a factor in why HE chose to be here along with a gaping hole at SG but I've never got the feeling Adelman really pushed for Martin. Obviously he is probably here because of contract length shooting and scoring but I think Flip was acting more on his own on these moves than people think because of the obvious ties to Adelman. I realize there is plenty of reasons to disagree with my stance (especially with Martin) but just sharing a perspective and thought based on the way some things have gone down from my somewhat limited knowledge. :)

I didn't mean to suggest that Flip signed Martin because Adelman named him as the guy he wanted here. I meant that Flip felt he needed a shooter who would fit Adelman's system. Flip made moves last summer intended to fit what Adelman needed to make a playoff push. If Flip had been coaching last year, I suspect he would have done things a bit differently. On the other hand, Flip's options were a bit limited.

Lip, you know as well as anyone we needed floor spacers to play with Rubio so although Martin had valuable experience in Adelman's system from Houston, we still needed a player like him or teams were going to continue to clog the lane and dare Ricky to shoot even more..plus we needed another player who could be used for the secondary scoring load when Love isn't going.
If Martin were a 2 way player, he'd be a max player.
Hopefully some of our young guys can become just that (2 way players that can shoot lights out from deep and score a variety of ways.
I think Martin still definitely has a place on this team though.

Let me first say that I'm not 100% sure on this, but I feel like this is what I heard when the deal was explained.
It has something to do with MIN and CLE's players being sent to Philly first and then Philly sending out the pieces where they belong. Almost like a corporation sending product to UPS, and then UPS dispersing it to its rightful destinations. Somehow in all that we got an exception.
Clearly, I too am fuzzy on the details. But my rough understanding was that in MIN and CLE sending the pieces to PHI first, that created the exception. I could have been explained wrong or I just didn't understand it clearly. If that helps, or someone else can confirm/deny/provide more info about, that'd be great.

In a multi-player trade, each team gets to structure they transaction however it suits them best (and remain legal).
I am guessing we split the trade up as Love for Young, which is where the TPE comes from, and then Luc & Shved for Wiggins and Bennett. I won't swear that was the exact scenario, because I'm not sure Luc & Shved for Wiggins & Bennett works, but something along those lines...

Cam and Tim, thanks for your replies. Based on the info you guys gave. I think it's likely we trade love for young first which is where the 6.3m exception came from. That also put us 1-2m below the salary cap, making it possible to swap shved and luc for wiggins and bennet. Wiggins and bennet are 3m more than shved and luc and being a couple million under the cap makes the swap legal.
Another kudos to flip for targeting young and the sixers. That 6m trade exception is another asset that can't be overlook. It can be used up to next off season and if used right, could net us a first round pick or a couple of seconds by absorbing a contract from another team. It could also get us a rotation player or be used to to acquire a non guaranteed deal to be used in another transaction.
