Mariota is the type of backup we need, someone who could step in as well if the Vikes move on from Cousins NEXT offseason. Mariota is still only 26 himself and wasn't that bad of a QB overall in TN.
Mariota just doesn't have it. Look how that team played when they benched him and put in Tannehill. Tannehill didn't even have to do much either to unlock that team and have them become a conference finalist. Literally he made a couple throws a game and that's all they needed. That was very telling to me about Mariota.
As a backup though, no doubt he isn't a good starter or even avg starter right now, but he can fill in and just maybe he figures it out. Look at his stats too, he wasn't even that bad over his time there.
Any guy you are looking at for backup will have flaws. Out of the backup QB's, I like him the best.
But again his team got better when he sat and the whole point of a backup is to hold the ship steady when the starter goes down. If Tannehill came in and lit it up then I could buy getting Mariota because Tannehill really would have carried that team, but Tannehill did so little to get that team to a highly competitive level that it really was damning for Marcus and what he couldn't do for them. I don't see the point getting a backup we know can't keep the team competitive if Kirk goes down. I would pass on both guys. They just aren't good enough.
My only issue is making broad based claims on 10 games. How good was Tannehill in the playoffs too? He didn't do much if I remember correctly. Really Mariota wasn't even horrible either, he only threw 2 INt's in the first 6 games. 7 TD passes. I can't say, he was the reason they went 2-4, sure he could have been better too. Nor can I say Tannehill was the prime reason they got on a roll either. That running game and defense stepped up and yes Tannehill played well.
I actually think Mariota is a better QB then Case Keenum, some other potential experienced backups. I think Bridgewater will get a starting chance/competition at minimum, he wouldn't be offered that with Cousins here.
I don't mind looking at the draft either though. I think getting a QB better then Mariota right away would be highly improbable though. But maybe a better one down the road.

I would take a flyer on Mariota. I think Andrew Dalton could be a surprise signing somewhere.

Stefon Diggs cleared out his Instagram account of all Vikings references.
Time to trade him and Rudolph to the Patriots.

A trade could be already be in the works and the information got back to Diggs? Maybe.

Or he is trolling people. His Twitter still has a pic of him as a Vikings player as a background pick in his profile. Like I told one of my friends if the Vikings deal Diggs they are going to get a haul for him. I'm not losing much sleep over whether or not they deal him. If he is dealt...that means there were some problems and the Vikings decided to move on.
Do people really buy in that there is actual momentum towards a trade? Just asking. Seems like there could be some smoke but I'm not convinced.

Given their cap situation and the holes in their lineup I wouldn't be shocked if he gets traded. Of course that fact also makes it harder to get value for him when other teams no you're desperate to create cap space.

We have lots of ways to create cap space so we aren't in a dire situation to trade him. We do need multiple pieces though and his whining and drama is not gonna last in this organization. Get a couple decent picks and ship him out. He's a great WR, but he's not worth the drama imo. How many good WR's are causing drama on good teams these days outside of AB? That seems to be a relic of the past.

Yep the Vikings-have plenty of options In terms of cap space. Other teams don't have players like Diggs available does there is leverage if teams want him. Look at what the Giants got for OBJ and Diggs is on a way better contract and probably is less of a hassle. As a side note I would not want anything to do with OBJ for what he costs. Again if the Vikings decide to move Diggs I'm ok with it because when has that ever come back to bite this organization when Spielman has been a part of the decision making process? It should be noted that losing Diggs would be a pretty big deal as he is a really good WR. I could see Irv Smith having a pretty big role and fill some of that real void. It would also leave a spot for the continued redemption story of Treadwell. lol jk... mostly. The Vikings have a bunch of younger WRs they have been stockpiling. Maybe another one emerges.

Trading him only frees up $5M in cap space so we would need a huge return.
This draft is loaded at WR so that might hurt us. Not that rookie WR's can come in and play, but it would be a good year to draft a WR in the first few rounds.

That's also a good reason to trade Diggs too because there seem to be plenty of guys who could slot right into his spot and we could pick up some additional picks to fill out the roster.
