Abe's Late Night DVR Review...
- Just as it reached halftime on the DVR... my phone lit up with a notification. Houston 119 - 114.
- It's rare that I let my DVR viewing get spoiled... probably best it happened tonight.
- Nothing to say other than an embarrassing loss. Yet again.
- Wake me when the Timberwolves want to get serious about the 2023 season. Rinse. Repeat..

Re: Gobert Returns - Wolves at Rockets GDT
Very disappointing loss but yet not surprising. This is who we are unfortunately. One problem is we don't know how to run a fast break. Guys run down the floor knowing a pass isn't coming. They barely even look for one. The dribbler is going to try to get all the way to the rim (Ant or Nowell). If it's DLO he is most likely to slow things down and run a half court set. During the course of a basketball game, you have to get some easy baskets. We rarely run a proper break that ends up in a finish after 2 or 3 passes. I've watched WNBA teams who take better advantage of break opportunities than we do.

Small sample size obviously, but we can learn some things in repeat matchups like this. The fact that Houston is a good rebounding team and we are not even with Gobert was illustrated last night as we got outrebounded by 6.
But the absurdly bad rebounding of all of our bigs other than Rudy and KAT was illustrated when they were missing Saturday night and Houston outrebounded us by 26! That's a significant difference in the span of just 2 days. If KAT ever comes back, I think our rebounding woes will disappear.

Sometimes, games are decided early. Houston started the game yesterday outrebounding the Timberwolves 16 - 4 in building its early lead.
The tone for the evening was set.

If a player cannot rebound they cannot defend. You have to rebound the ball to get a stop on defense! It's really that simple. The Wolves largely lost to Memphis because they got crushed on the boards by the likes of Brandon Clarke. Outside of Gobert, who can only do so much, we gave away other decent rebounders (Bev and Vando and the somewhat unlikely rook - Rudy white lite 2.0). We really need more guys who can grab boards. All hope in KAT? I guess if he comes back this year. Not looking good.
Re: Gobert Returns - Wolves at Rockets GDT
I was so disgusted watching this game that I had to wait to post.
Once again we played a game where we thought we could win on talent alone, in spite of the fact that Houston made it very clear early in the game that they were going to hit us, literally, every time down the court.
We got mad, we got frustrated, and we lost our cool. The ball movement wasn't horrible but the player movement was.
The guys we usually rely on to provide some resistance gave us none.
When DLO yelled at Rudy to stop bitching and get down the floor I knew the game was over, it had happened two ends in a row.
How does Kyle Anderson lose his temper for what amounts to talk and jostling.
Houston got under our skin and we played like shit.
ANT was baited into trapping drives and instead of kicking or pulling up for the 10-14 footer he just kept barreling in expecting different results.
The season isn't over, but I hope we've learned in the past 3 weeks that you have to play smart and give effort with your feet and hands every night, because every team in the NBA is an NBA team

Houston is not really an incredibly bad, immature team of mostly selfish young guys who don't have any idea what they're doing. Maybe they've actually just been very very unlucky...
... as they lost 13 mostly non-competitive games in a row... and 18 of 19 before last night.
[Note: Young, mercurial, wildly inconsistent and immature, Jalen Green outfoxed and outplayed alleged savvy veteran, Kyle Anderson, last night to a comical degree. It was shameful.]

LOL. Nope, they are exactly how you described them in your first sentence, as you know. Even when they've been lucky to face a team missing two of its three max players like Saturday night, they still lose. But even undisciplined teams have nights where a guy like Green gets hot like last night, so you have to show up every game. And this club doesn't. I didn't watch this game, but I did hear a despondent Chris Finch post-game lament his team's inability (refusal?) to give 100% every night. He's starting to sound like a broken record, but our guys still don't respond. I'm a Finch advocate, but I'm beginning to wonder if this team needs more of a disciplinarian than a player's coach. You know, someone who consistently holds his players accountable by yanking them off the court when the effort is lacking. Pop probably would have replaced all five guys a couple minutes into last night's game.

I can't bring myself to watch the game, so maybe someone who did can answer this question. I 've loved watching Jaden guarding Green this season. It sounds like Finchie opened the game with SloMo on Green, is that right? Why? Did Jaden get a chance to defend Green during the game, and was he also ineffective?

D'Angelo Russell -> Kenyon Martin Jr.
Anthony Edwards -> Eric Gordon
Jaden McDaniels -> Jalen Green
Kyle Anderson -> Tari Eason
Rudy Gobert -> Alperen Sengun
And like I noted earlier in this thread, McDaniels just looked off. He was a step slower than usual, not as physical, and frankly looked a bit out of it. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with his recent shooting slump, but he was not his usual self.
Green got wherever he wanted most of the night no matter who had the assignment. Green had his way with McDaniels, Edwards, Rivers, Nowell. It didn't matter.
