Manu was fearless going to the hoop, and moved non-stop. Both have great vision and are lefties. Not the worst ideal for Dlo but I don't think he's quite made it there. If he did everything 30% faster I would start to see it.
Manu is in the HOF and was a hell of a guard it think it's interesting that Russell was so enamored with a guy that spent a lot of his career coming off the bench and played a winning type of basketball. Will Russell he willing to make those type of sacrifices? Manu made plenty of money but he probably could have demanded more. To me whether or not the Wolves should keep Russell past his current contract is significantly impacted by what his price tag is. It will be interesting to see if he and the Wolves end up with a reasonable extension this offseason. He could still be traded after that at some point.
Yeah, his salary for trade purposes might be the better asset. I just cant see any way that his camp settles for 20mil which would be where I would want him for his contributions.
That's a fair position. Do you have some ideas of what Russell as an expiring would bring the Wolves?
Let's look at this more closely. Is Russell any or much better than Brogdon? Rozier? Lavert? Lonzo Ball? Dinwiddie? Marcus Smart? FVV? To me there isn't much reason he can ask for much more than 20-25 million a year (I'm kinda figuring in that contracts will go up with that top figure) based on his play and I like Russell. Comparing him to those guys does make your case that they could move on from him too.
I think if Russell does have realistic salary expectations he could end up being a value guy actually either for the Wolves for the next few years or possibly in a trade. Is Russell even really gonna be able to be like I want Kyle Lowry Chris Paul money?
To me the problem isn't Russell or Towns (not that they aren't part of the problem) or Edwards they need more around them. I think we all expect some of what is needed to be Edwards becoming a top player in the league (but Beverly won't be around forever) but the Wolves need more out of another spot ideally 2. McDaniels continuing his progression would help. To me the Wolves need to add to what they already have not make some significant change. I'm not completely against trading Russell though like I said especially if he is like nah man I'm worth at least 30 million...then yeah a trade would make sense. The bad news is when it comes to a trade...teams may know what his expected price tag is too.
I think some players that aren't max guys (that's Russell now) have figured out that taking a pretty good contract earlier isn't a bad way to go. Dennis Schoeder is one cautionary tale about going for the most you can get. It wasn't that long ago even I was questioning whether Russell was even going to be worth 20 million going forward. Russell has always been under contract but he has been through the situation where the team he is on doesn't really appreciate him super highly.
