Butler practiced today and Thibodeau says he will play Wednesday. Even with the (apparent) bad blood among our stars, it's difficult to imagine the Wolves playing any worse than they did in preseason with Butler on the court and Rose back on the bench, and they should be much better. I have to admit I'm intrigued.

Looks like we are ready to start the season, with Butler starting!

Just ignore the outside noise over the past few weeks... ;-)

Interesting to think about where we're at and how we got here. I recall Thibodeau being asked in an interview about Butler, sometime this summer after the story broke about Butler's dissatisfaction with Towns but well before Butler demanded his trade. Thibodeau's response, almost verbatim was, "this is the right place for Jimmy." Somewhere in that interview Thibodeau that he and Jimmy regularly communicate. So I have no doubt in my mind that Butler clearly and probably repeatedly communicated his dissatisfaction, including his inclination to go elsewhere, directly to Thibodeau. And the stubborn Thibodeau probably told him to just be patient and that "this is right place for him" just as he said in that interview. Butler, feeling like his words were hitting a brick wall, finally had Thibodeau come to LA to hear the message that apparently wasn't getting through to the stubborn, one-track Thibodeau: Butler was profoundly unhappy and wanted out. And knowing Thibodeau as he does, Butler leaked the conversation to make sure his message to Thibodeau wasn't ignored again.

But stubborn, inflexible, unimaginative Thibs, simply dug his heels in and made it as hard as he could for other teams to trade for Butler under Glen Taylor's watching eye. Why? Well Thibodeau already told Jimmy and us - because this is the right place for Jimmy. Of course, whether Jimmy stays or goes ultimately determines how long Thibodeau will hang onto what will be his last head coaching job in the NBA. If Jimmy is traded, Thibodeau's departure is a certainty, if not now, then sometime this season and no later immediately after the season. But if Jimmy stays, there is no way Glen fires Thibodeau until after the season if at all. Why? Because you keep Butler only if you think you have a chance to re-sign him, so firing Thibodeau significantly reduces the chances of re-signing him. You're kidding yourself if you don't think Thibodeau's actions are motivated at least in part to protect his own personal/professional interests, which in this case includes winning games AND maintaining is tenuous hold on his dream job as an NBA head coach.

So in spite of Butler's public trade demand, the owner's directive to trade him, our young star's (KAT's) disdain for Butler and even the most recent antics of Butler, the Wolves are about to start with the season with Butler starting at SG. We've heard multiple reports from trusted reporters that multiple teams have been frustrated by what they view as unrealistic demands, expressing the opinion that Thibodeau is doing what he can to avoid dealing Butler. The only specific trade proposal we're learned about was apparently a deal with Miami that consisted of Butler in exchange for J. Richardson, Waiters and Miami's protected 2019 1st rd pick. Apparently, the deal was about to happen as evidenced by the fact that medicals were exchanged. Then Thibodeau apparently called Riley and upped the ante, demanding more draft picks. If these reports are true, and I believe they ring true, then what Thibodeau did strikes me as the actions of a guy who just couldn't get himself to go through with the deal.

Some might say Thibodeau upped the ante at the last second because he suddenly realized it was a bad deal. That makes no sense and isn't the Thibs we all know. He's not given to sudden impulse moves. If he thought it was a bad deal when he upped the ante, then he certainly thought it was a bad deal earlier. My guess is that Layden negotiated the deal and when Thibodeau found out Riley accepted it, he acted in a way he knew would kill it. Thibodeau wasn't going to let it happen and Glen refused to step in and overrule him. Thibodeau's actions look like the actions of a guy who, at the last second, just couldn't get himself to part with Jimmy. What Thibodeau apparently asked for, more first round picks, is the one thing Miami doesn't really have since they've already traded away their 2021 pick, which means they can't trade their 2020, 2021 or 2022 pick. I suspect Thibodeau knew Riley would balk at that last second change to the deal and that it would also piss him off. That was fine with Thibodeau because that was his intent all along.

Thibodeau never intended to trade Butler. Shockingly, here we are with Butler as our starting SG to open the season. I'll admit there's a part of me that continues to think that maybe, just maybe, Butler will stay healthy, the team will come together, finish in the top 3 or 4 and win their first playoff series after which Butler will happily sign an extension to remain here. But then my rational mind kicks in and reminds me of just how incredibly remote that possibility is. The problem with Thibodeau is that, what is only part of my thinking, mainly fantasy, is all of Thibodeau's thinking, his distorted reality. The most likely outcome of all of this, by far, is a longer run for Thibodeau as our head coach and Butler eventually leaving with nothing of value flowing back to the Wolves in return next summer. Others may disagree, but that's a terrible outcome for this team.

So I'm headed back to my fantasy with Jimmy, KAT, Teague and the rest of the gang kicking ass in the Western Conference this season. I'll just wait until next summer to face the harsh reality that awaits us.

I'll say this Lip that while I do wonder now what Thibs angle really is if the best deal available wa that Richardson and 1st with waiters as filler...no problem with anyone mixing that deal. In addition has anyone seen the media day picks of Waiters from this year? Dude is FAT.

Oddly I'm also kinda looking forward to seeing Butler out there. All in all I think anyone on the roster that's not happy with Jimmy on the team also is keenly aware that he helps them win games. They aren't that stupid especially after the way they looked in preseason. Those games probably made them much more willing to have him back as opposed to him just sitting around while they play with no other help.

seems that money is the biggest issue. The wolves simply cant clear the space necessary to make the renegotiation and extension happen. But, thats all on thibs. He should have thought about all that before overpaying teague and signing taj, etc.. etc..

second issue seems to be an issue with kat. They had a 1:1 meeting on friday and going by jimmys demeanor when asked that question, doesnt seem much has changed between the 2.
