Phenom, I don't see Dallas entertaining your offer. They'd be giving up multiple first-round picks in the deal. Why wouldn't they just acquire Dejounte Murray for themselves and cut Minnesota out? Furthermore, why would they trade future first round picks to offload a solid player in Tim Hardaway Jr. that they just signed to a new deal? The short answer is that they wouldn't.
The creativity is commendable. I just don't see it being a realistic trade.

I see what you are saying but is Murray the right fit for Dallas next to Doncic? Maybe, I don't know. The question for Dallas is do they believe a core of Luka, Hardaway and Bertans for at least the next 3 years is better than having cap space to bring in someone else instead at the cost of 3 1sts in the 20s? As a Wolves fan I'm ok if Dallas rolls with what they have honestly.
Re: DeJounte Murray Trade
If Brunson moves onto New York, it does make sense that Dallas needs some other ball handler/shot maker to help out Luka. DLO could be an option for them and he has experience carrying a higher usage than Brunson ever did with Dallas. The issue is whether their defense can hold up with both him and Luka.
In addition, San Antonio may not mind DLO as a "hold the fort down for a year" starting PG on a big expiring deal that helps run a competent offense as they bring their young guys along (and yes, lose a lot of games most likely).
I gotta think there is a lot of dialogue going on right now with these front offices.

I don't see the Mavs being as bad off as others. Hardaway Jr will be back they have Dinwiddie plus Wood will have a significantly bigger offensive role than an big they played in the playoffs last year. Meanwhile they could add a guard in FA. Dennis Schroeder would be an interesting relatively cheap player they could add. Meanwhile they supposedly were quite high on Hardy who they were able to to add by acquiring him on draft night. Hardy might not be a guy that helps then this year but part of the conversation we are having is beyond this season and if they are right about his upside he could be a factor in a year or 2.

Yup! And I do believe the Spurs new cap situation allows for a straight up DLo for Murray trade, plus whatever pieces are needed to satisfy all sides.
Re: DeJounte Murray Trade
Assuming Brunson signs with the Knicks as expected, Dallas will definitely need to backfill for Brunson. The good news for Dallas is that they don't need a true lead guard to backfill because they have Luka as their de facto primarily ball-handler/facilitator. They won't be able to sign anyone of Brunson's caliber as a free agent, but they won't need to because they're already a better team through the return of Hardaway Jr. and the acquisition of Christian Wood.
I suspect that the Mavs will prioritize signing Tyus Jones or Dennis Schroeder. On the other hand, I can also see Dallas having an interest in trading for DLO who could be a secondary ball-handler and big shot maker, which were the two main things Brunson provided them. But if the Mavs are willing to give up three first-round picks, then I see them trying to do a deal with the Spurs for Murray. The problem for the Mavs is that they've already traded their 2023 1st round pick with top-10 protection. So the Mavs can't offer a first-round pick earlier than 2025 and it could get pushed out further because of the top-10 protection on that pick. That's where the Wolves might have an edge over the Mavs in competing for Murray and that's how I could see a three-team deal emerging with the Wolves, Mavs and Spurs.
A pretty straight-forward and realistic three-way deal would be the following:
- Wolves get Murray, McDermott, Mavs 2025 1st-round pick (lottery protected; converting to 2 seconds in 2028)
- Mavs get DLO
- Spurs get Bertans, Powell or Bullock, Naz, Wolves 2024 1st round pick (unprotected), Wolves 2026 1st round pick (unprotected), 2027 first-round pick swap, Wolves 2028 1st round pick (top 5 protected - converting to two 2nd round picks in 2030).
For the Spurs it's all about picks and to a lesser extent young talent. The Wolves picks and Naz Reid would be assets the Spurs would want while Bertans and Powell or Bullock would essentially be salary filler with potential trade value down the road. Powell's contract expires the end of next season, which would be another plus for the Spurs.
The Mavs get a really good starting PG who can make up for the loss of Brunson without giving up much, i.e., a non-lottery 1st in 2025 and a couple guys who aren't critical to their success.
The Wolves get the best player in the deal, Murray, who would upgrade the PG position and fit really well given his rebounding and playmaking prowess. McDermott is a bit of a throw-in, but her provides a sharp-shooter at the SF position, which would pave the way for the Wolves to trade Beasley to open up room for Nowell.

Hmm.. Washington acquiring Morris and Barton might take that out of the Murray sweepstakes... :D
Re: DeJounte Murray Trade
I can't swallow 3 picks for Murray. We are the Wolves. If the price is 3 picks I extend DLo for 1 dollar more than Brunson gets.

One thing to note about the new potential Brunson contract... are we certain he's reached his ceiling? More accurately, is New York certain? Maybe they're willing to pay him on projection.
After all, he has taken on an increasingly greater role each year without adversely impacting his efficiency. In fact, he's become even more efficient. And then there was this most recent playoff run where he averaged nearly 22 ppg and showed that he could carry the load even without Doncic... averaging a whopping 32 ppg without Doncic in the lineup over a three game stretch. IN THE PLAYOFFS. When it happened may actually matter in any comparison between players. For example, Russell now has two underwhelming playoff series on his resume.
So with all that being written... isn't it possible that the Knicks (and quite probably many other teams) think Brunson is either already better and/or will be better than D. Russell?
Re: DeJounte Murray Trade
According to Knicks beat report Fred Katz of The Athletic, the front office has at least looked into it. In a recent episode of the Callin Shots podcast Katz confirmed that the team has been making the calls around the league for a potential Julius Randle trade. But he also affirmed that nothing is likely to happen in the coming offseason: "The Knicks have inquired with other teams about moving Julius Randle ... I'm not optimistic, if you're somebody who wants them to trade Randle, I wouldn't predict that's what happens this summer. We're talking about like giving him away. Maybe if you take back a contract of equal value." - via R.P. Salao @ Clutch Points
No surprise that the Knicks really want to jettison Randle's terrible contract. Perhaps this opens up an opportunity for the Wolves to get Murray without giving up any draft picks. Here's the three-way scenario:
Wolves Get: Murray + Randle
Knicks Get: Jason Richardson
Spurs Get the following:
DLO
Naz
Knicks' 2023 1st-round pick (top 4 protected)
Mavs' 2023 1st-round pick via Knicks (already top 10 protected)
Knicks' 2025 1st-round pick (top 4 protected)
Looks like a really nice deal for the Spurs. They get three 1st-round picks and two of those three could easily be lottery picks in the 5-14 range. Those picks are more front-loaded than they would otherwise be because of the extra 2023 pick the Knicks can offer courtesy of Dallas. They also get a promising young big in Naz Reid and a good PG for next season who at the end of the season becomes major additional cap room.
Looks like a good deal for the Knicks because they offload the bad Randle contract and they get a bonus by receiving a very solid two-way rotation SG in Richardson.
What about the Wolves? Well, it's a mixed bag. We'd be stuck with Randle's contract. But we'd have a huge upgrade and perfect fit at the PG position in Murray without giving up any future picks or any of our young talent like McDaniels, Nowell, Bolmaro, Moore, Kessler, Minott or Spagnolo. Interesting possibility. But I just can't get beyond being stuck with Randle and his $24-29M contract for the next four seasons. Yuck!!
