Glad to see that Miami has re-opened talks with the Wolves. And I'm glad Thibodeau's not very involved. Thibodeau clearly wants to keep Butler and simply won't deal Butler if left to his own devices. I'd really like to believe the Wolves are also engaged in talks with the Sixers and Celtics, but nothing has been reported to suggest that's happening.

If we assume the report was true that Miami was willing to trade Richardson, their 2019 first round pick and Waiters for Butler, then the fact that Miami is re-engaging with the Wolves suggests they're now willing to improve their offer. From the beginning I've always thought Miami would be the Wolves most likely trading partner for Butler. And the Houston offer, coupled with the early success of some Eastern Conference teams, has to have re-ignited or turned up Pat Riley fire for acquiring Butler.

I'd love to know what Miami is now offering. I recall the report said that the prior deal fell apart when Thibodeau called Riley and insisted on getting another first round draft pick. That would have to be their 2023 pick because Miami has already traded its 2021 pick. I wonder if Miami is now willing to include that extra pick. If so, you'd think the Wolves would take the deal since that was the extra piece the Wolves wanted that tanked the deal the last time. Or maybe Miami is now offering to include Adebayo. Or maybe they're offering Olynyk instead of Waiters. Or maybe they're offering Whiteside and Richardson for Butler and Gorgui.

I continue to believe Butler will be traded to Miami with an outside chance that Washington, Boston or the Sixers step in to the fray and end up getting him.

I'm going to put myself in Riley's shoes and assume prior reports of what was offered were true. Standing in for Riley, I'm going to say no to your offer. I'm looking at Olynyk as an important piece to make a strong Eastern Conference run with Butler, Dragic, Whiteside, etc. Olynyk is a modern big who can hit threes and space the floor. He's also a good rebounder and a great teammate. So I can't give up Olynyk since the purpose of getting Butler is to be competitive for a top 4 finish in the East. Also, I recall that last time we talked you (Thibs) were willing to take Richardson, Waiters and the 2019 pick if you could also get our 2023 pick. So I'm countering with the deal you insisted on before and that I rejected. I'll go even further and agree to no protection on the 2019 pick, but I have to have lottery protection on the 2023 pick. Things have changed. The Eastern Conference is better than Pat Riley probably thought heading into the season. And most importantly, the Miami Heat have been outbid, in my opinion, according to reports concerning the Houston Rockets offering four first-round picks.

What Minnesota might have accepted THEN is not what they should be looking to accept NOW. The situation has evolved and the demands should be higher now with an opposing organization entering the bidding war. A good front office will play each team's offer against one another in order to see what the highest bid will be.

I'd tell Pat Riley to significantly rework his offer and that I'm calling Daryl Morey in the morning to see if we can come to an agreement because we're much closer there than we are here [with Miami].

Geek - Yes, I think that's the deal to make with the Sixers. But I suspect the Sixers would not be willing to do that deal. I don't think they could live with the optics of dealing the 1st overall pick in the draft just one year ago for Butler. More realistically (assuming the Sixers are even interested in Butler), I think the best we could get from them would be Covington, Muscala, the 2021 Miami pick and both the Chicago and Sacramento second round picks in 2019.

So give me your counter-offer. I just countered geek's proposal with an offer equal to the Wolves prior offer. Heck I'll throw in the 2020 pick swap option as well. So you're now filling in for Thibodeau and Layden. If you're rejecting my revised proposal, you need to counter. Ball's in your court. I can't read your mind. Apparently you want more than you were willing to accept before. You need to tell me what that something more is.
