Lillard getting to the free throw line 15 times and making all 15 didn't help either. Some of the calls were legit, but some were just absolute B.S. star treatment. It is what it is though. Hopefully Ant gets all those calls some day.

We're better than Portland, and we will beat them 4 times out of 5 if both teams are healthy. Sure they have a great starting lineup...but I would argue ours is better, and there's no question we are a much deeper team with a much deeper bench. But there were all sorts of reasons Portland was favored by 5 1/2 tonight and we were destined to lose:
1) Portland was 100% healthy, and we were missing our most prolific offensive starter and 2 of our most important reserves.
2) This was the second night of a BTB. Ant has said publicly he doesn't play well in back to backs (he proved himself wrong tonight).
3) Portland is a great 3-point shooting team, and we are notoriously bad at defending the perimeter.
4) There hasn't been a big drop off this season when our starters go out...in fact, our reserves have regularly outplayed the other team. But having to play guys like Wendell Moore and Austin Rivers instead of Prince and JMac is a big problem. To put some numbers next to it, Prince and JMac have a combined on/off of +24.9...Rivers and Moore Jr. are a combined -35.9. That's a 60.8 point swing per 100 possessions...nuf said.
I know most here aren't fans of moral victories...I am. Hanging with Portland tonight told me a lot about this team. This is the 5th entertaining game we have played without KAT, and we are 3-2. This team has been fun to watch recently every night.
I'm a fan of on/off numbers over a large sample size (and especially over an entire career)...it's a stat that seldom lets me down over a large sample size in evaluating a player's importance to a team. But there were two negative numbers tonight that don't match at all what I saw. I thought SloMo and Naz were both outstanding tonight, but they were -12 and -17, respectively (DLo was overheard thanking both of them in the locker room post game ;-) ) SloMo is rapidly becoming my favorite player on the team, and was an efficient 14-7-6 tonight with only 2 turnovers. As he gets more and more comfortable being the de facto PG, he allows DLo to thrive more in a shooting guard role (24 points on only 15 shots despite 5 turnovers and only 3 assists). I think replacing KAT in the starting lineup with SloMo brings out the best in Russell by allowing him to play more off ball. It will be interesting to see what happens when KAT comes back. Does he substitute SloMo for Jaden (who had the same number of rebounds as jester tonight despite jester going to bed before the game was over) in the starting lineup, allowing Dlo to continue to play more off ball. We'll have to see.
Anyway, I'm excited to see what happens Monday night. Calf injuries are killing us right now...they tend to linger and recur, so I don't expect JMac back by then. Healthy Portland is too good for us if we're missing three key players, so we will have to overachieve Monday to steal a game on the road.
Yeah, McDaniels has got to rebound better. He plays exclusively the 3 and some 4, yet he is averaging a pathetic 2 defensive rebounds per game this year. I mean, you almost have to try to avoid the ball to be that shitty. It's hard to understand.
Overall though, I thought the team played hard. They were beat by the more talented team with fresh legs at home.

Good post. But I think it might just be the way Finch runs his offense vs. anything SlowMo is doing. Towns has a career high 5.3 assists/game this season which is well above his career average of 3.2. If I look at per 36 numbers (to even out minutes), Towns is averaging 5.6 assists and SlowMo 5.1, so both guys are distributing from that PF spot at a high rate. It's the Finch version of the Triangle Offense!

I was able to semi-stream/gamecast/follow while talking to relatives I see every other year. What's interesting is that the perception of who and how good the Wolves are has changed amongst casual NBA fans in the past two years.
There's an expectation that the Wolves are a mid-tier playoff team that should at least win a first round series. That's a pretty dramatic change since I last visited with these relatives.
We will get there. We aren't necessarily improving at the pace we thought we would improve at, but we will get there.

Am I the only one who thinks this team is more fun to watch without KAT?

Not at all, SP. I'm not saying they're better without KAT, but they are definitely more fun to watch. The last 5 games have been some of the most entertaining basketball of the season.

I agree that this team has been more fun to watch since KAT went down. Note we were really fun to watch last season with KAT but no Gobert. KAT and Gobert together seems to result in a slower, less exciting brand of basketball. On hte other hand, the game against the Pacers around Thanksgiving was fun to watch and we have KAT and Gobert together in that one.

Yeah, that Indy game was every bit as fun as the last 5, and tells me the jury is still out on the KAT/Rudy experiment.
I think a more relevant topic is the offensive emergence of DLo since KAT went down. Barreiro spent 20 minutes on this topic Sunday morning. It doesn't mean DLo and KAT can't play together...rather it is more evidence that having another PG (SloMo) on the court with Russell allows him to flourish in his most comfortable role.
So, let's say the Wolves continue to play well with KAT out...what do the Wolves do? Some will say find a way to move KAT in the offseason, but I don't endorse that idea. A better idea might be to substitute SloMo for Jaden in the starting lineup. Kyle has been brilliant as essentially the middle of a triangle offense repeatedly finding Ant, DLo or Rudy for easy buckets, and could be even more effective with our best 3-point shooter added to the mix. I love Jaden, but his inability to rebound consistently continues to be a problem.
Further, Barreiro is convinced the Wolves brass in engaged in constant conversation looking for ways to move DLO, and mentioned that his improved offensive play recently enhances his trade value. If he continues to shoot and score like he has the past five games, there will be teams out there looking for on off guard who can provide a lot of offense (while ignoring his subpar defense). Maybe we could get back a serviceable player (not a star of course) and picks in exchange. I would feel comfortable going forward with a SloMo/JMac PG tandem.
In either scenario, DLo is the player we need to be playing really well right now...either because he can give us a better chance to win, or to maximize his trade value.

D'Angelo Russell's been mostly cooking over his last 15 games (not just the last five) so I don't think we can simply attribute the improved performances to Karl-Anthony Towns' injury, or any one thing at all. Minnesota's played five games without Towns, and Russell's increased production predates that at a glimpse.
Last 15 G: 18.5 PPG, 6.7 APG (2.7 TOV), 1.2 SPG, and 0.4 BPG on 52.0/40.2/86.1 splits (64.4 TS%)
It's a combination of Russell just making shots at a rate closer to what he's produced in recent seasons, Chris Finch being forced to play more spread pick-and-roll, and of course Russell playing more off-ball with increased usage alongside multiple ball-handlers (Kyle Anderson, Anthony Edwards) -- taking advantage of his abilities as a secondary scorer rather than forcing him to be a more limited table-setter. More players that can create, score, and facilitate offensively in the same lineup is a good thing.
I think talk of trading Russell right now, especially after the last month of basketball that he's had for this team, is rather silly and stinks of personal preference. The Wolves have won eight of their last 13 games with and without Towns, and Russell's been absolutely crucial to that short-term success. This group needs continuity more than anything. Don't rock the boat quite yet.
The better question(s) might be:
- Why did Finch ignore the obvious strengths of the roster for so long?
- How does Finch incorporate Towns back into the mix without reverting to the unstructured or systemless "flow" that we saw previously?
- Will Finch find more playing time for Anderson even when everyone is healthy? And if so, then who will it come at the expense of?
I think those are more legitimate questions than wondering how to move Russell or what they'd realistically get back for him.

What bugs me most about DLO is that we seem to rely on him to eventually win or lose the games. He has been too streaky good and bad with too many bad longer streaks for me to want to count on him over the long term.
Like the stats above show us when DLO is good to great the Wolves tend to be a good to great team also, but we also likely have a losing record when he isn't good. We really need more consistency from him to be a great team. I am not confident we can count on it either. I can just see another month stretch of bad shooting and when his shot isn't falling he is poor at defense and other things to be effective. So I am on board selling high on DLO.
