What I want: sign Hezonja (or Joe Harris) to back up Butler, sign Lucas Nogueira to a minimum deal, maybe Shelvin Mack (or Mario Chalmers) as a minimum third guard
My doomsday scenario is that Thibs gives Rose more money than he should and does something incredibly stupid like bring back Corey Brewer.
I liked the way Derrick Rose played when he got here last season. But that's a very small sample of games and his history tells us he won't hold up physically for anything close to a full season even as a part-time player. His entire career history also tells us he's a poor 3-point shooter by today's NBA standards. So signing Rose, we'd be adding a player who can't hold up physically and can't provide us with what we need most from a backup guard or wing -- i.e., 3-point shooting. It seems to me that even the vet minimum would be too much for him and that we'd be better off using the little room we have under the luxury tax to sign someone else at the minimum. The thought of paying more than the vet minimum to sign Rose makes me sick to my stomach. But I have the same fear that Thibodeau might do just that. As Q noted, Thibs continues to stubbornly cling to his boys.

That's why I want another guard. If Jones is gonna get a bigger role anyway, then add a third PG who we might just use. If Rose AND Jimmy are out, that frees up time for, in my vision, Hezonja and Okogie.

My top choices for Wolves FA signings this summer are Joe Harris and Jerami Grant in that order.

I can't believe the money and players already signed. We need to just sit around and wait this out. No wonder Wolfson said the Wolves weren't In on Joe Harris. They weren't spending 8 million a year on him and I don't blame them I wouldn't either with the luxury tax concerns. I hope teams keep spending that money.
Also I feel very confident Rose signs for the vet min. I remember reading something recently that he actually turned down some better offers last offseason to sign with the Cavs.

Well, it looks like the best we can do is re-sign Belly for around $5 million per year and then fill out the rest of the roster with young minimum salary vets.

So here's the Wolves salary situation after releasing Cole and signing Rose to the vet minimum. By my calculation, the Wolves are currently about $7.1 million under the luxury tax threshold with 11 roster spots filled and at least 3 more to fill.
My calculation assumes that Rose's $2.5 million contract only counts slightly more than $1.4 million for luxury tax purposes. It also assumes that we sign Bates-Diop for $1.5 million. I'm not sure about my assumption on the Rose contract only counting $1.5 million against the luxury tax and I'm just guessing on the Bates-Diop contract.
If my calculation is right, I can't see how the Wolves can realistically pay Belly more than about $4.5 million per year and still remain under the luxury tax threshold while filling the two remaining roster spots. I suspect someone will come along and offer more than that to Belly. So the question is this: What do the Wolves have in mind for the $4 million they would otherwise use on Belly? Consequential players like Joe Harris, Will Barton, Ilyasova and Jerami Grant are all signing for between $7 and $8 million per year. So barring a significant trade, I just don't see the Wolves augmenting their roster in any significant way beyond signing their two 2018 draftees. In fact, the Wolves could end up going backwards by losing both Belly and Crawford without any significant players replacing them beyond two totally unproven rookies taken in the low first and low second rounds. I know many like to say we're better off without Crawford. Well, I don't buy that. His offense won games for the Wolves last season. I wasn't sorry to see him go, but losing both he and Belly will hurt what was already a weak Wolves bench.
There are plenty of moves that COULD be made. Our front office sitting on their hands pursuing bargain bin, clearance rack free agents doesn't do anything for me, though.
Also, not that it's a big deal, Bates-Diop's cap hit this year should be closer to $800K rather than $1.5M.
