Okay, but only after I exhausted all avenues with Durant (I know), Horford, and possibly trading for Butler.

I personally believe every single one of those ships have sailed. Durant and Horford were complete long shots before this even began. The Butler trades have already been evaluated and passed. I'm all for signing a Deng or Gasol for 2 years, as that provides us with a quality veteran presence who knows the system, along with productivity on the investment. It also will come off the books at the most opportune time for our franchise when we have to begin looking at extending some of our core in LaVine and Wiggins.

I may be in the minority, but i'd even overpay by a couple million to sign Deng for two seasons. He'd provide a ton in this new system in practices and games. A seamless transition/consistency is necessary for a young upcoming team, and Deng is the best option here.

However, let's suppose for a minute we put up 50 wins next season, and all of a sudden we become much more attractive to the upper echelon of FA's. Is that Deng contract going to keep us from being able to add that big piece that could bring a title to Minnesota?

Even if we put up 50 wins, we're not close to being a real contender. I highly doubt a James, Durant, Westbrook, etc. is ever coming to Minnesota. The way the league is set up is to allow these top 5-10 players to continuously sign 2 year deals, and championship hunt. That will be with organizations that have established winning cultures. We are far from there, maybe at least 5-10 years from there.

I don't think you can deny that Deng would have a vast improvement on our win total and our roster progression, and therefore he'd be a great get. I still very well doubt he comes here, but i'd love to have him. Even with Deng, I'd say we are still hunting for .500 next season. And if it is the case that you are correct and we can attract a top free agent, then Deng at 1 year and $14mil is a good trade chip, especially when you consider that he just helped lead a baby team and a black hole of a franchise to 50 wqins. Though if we reach 50 wins i'd say LaVine, Wiggins, or Towns (maybe all) took significant leaps so we probably would not be looking to add a top free agent as we should be more concerned with keeping those soon to be max players together.

You're being contradictory here. How can he have a vast impact on our win total, and yet we would still be battling to be a .500 team? My point is I don't see him have that big of an impact on our win total.

Well we finished with 29 wins, right? I personally would say an improvement of 12 wins in the West to .500 would be a great step with a completely retooled coaching staff/playbook. Deng is going to make the transition from a new offensive/defensive scheme a lot easier than if there wasn't an ex-thibs player on our roster. I don't think Wiggins, LaVine, and Towns improve enough to carry our team to .500 in the West without the presence of KG/Prince (without them i would say we likely hover around 30ish wins). But if you add Deng, i think we very well end up at least .500 in Thibs' first year in the West. Again, Deng just isn't an improvement on the court. His presence will make a difference in practice/locker room for questions/explanations of schemes.

I guarantee you we will win 12 more games if we don't do anything else this offseason. Deng or no Deng, that's going to happen.

I know you're a betting man, so i'd take you up on this if interested. I doubt we see Deng sign here, so i'll give you a proposal. $100 if we get 42+ wins without Deng or any other significant free agent, $100 to me if we see 41 or less wins with the same restrictions. If we sign Deng (or any other important free agent) we can revisit!
