Andrew Nembhard

Wolves should have drafted him. :) Wolves had two opportunities as he was picked 31st overall. He has been blowing up while starting for Pacers. Last game he scored 31 points against Warriors, while collecting 13 assists, 8 rebounds, 5 triples and +16 overall. He may already be better than our max contract point guard and he's a rookie on a second round contract. I ranked him higher than Moore and Kessler, though admittedly I was just as high on Chandler and TyTy. With our weakness at point guard, Timmy should have drafted one, but I guess he was afraid of upsetting our two fragile egos.

Your guy, Kevin Chandler played 26 minutes in the Grizzlies' win over Miami last night. He was as +18 with 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and only 1 turnover. I wanted the Wolves to draft Ty Ty, but he hasn't been that impressive so far. But Nembhard has been fantastic and Chandler looked good last night.

One of my favorites in the draft was Roddy. I never expected him to get picked as high as 23, but the Grizzlies seem to know what they're doing when it comes to drafting. Wolves ownership should have raided the Grizzlies front office rather than the Nuggets to replace Rosas.

Back to your point about drafting a PG. I agree that's what the Wolves should have done. Maybe Moore can ultimately fill that role. I loved the Minott pick. I was ok with the Moore pick since he was a guy on my list to draft in the 1st round. After initially balking at the Kessler pick (largely because I knew nothing about him), I quickly came around and liked that pick as well. So I can't complain about Connelly's first draft at the helm of the Wolves. I think he did a good job. But I still think we should have drafted a PG - or signed one as a free agent - or traded for one.

I liked the Minott pick too. Yeah, I was hopeful we'd draft one of the top 3 point guards. I loved Chandler because of his explosiveness, but his size is a concern. Kentucky has a long history of churning out good guards and TyTy's college stats were just as good if not better than Maxey who has been a late round gem. Nembhard was an older prospect that I likened to Tyus Jones and Monte Morris and was more NBA ready than the other two and had more size than Chandler. I would have been happy with any of the three, but I think Nembhard was third on my list. TyTy has really been buried on the roster at Houston, so until he gets minutes, its hard to know how he'll do. Chandler has Ja Morant and Tyus Jones ahead of him, so he mostly gets minutes when one of the other two are hurt, but he will have great mentorship. I didn't expect that Nembhard would blow up this soon, but he looks great so far. One guy you liked a lot, Dyson Daniels, has done pretty well in limited minutes. Jalen Williams has looked promising as well. I think this year's draft class is pretty solid.

I'm in the minority here, because I'm comfortable with our PG depth (although of course I would modify the rotation and minutes). I suspect TC knew he was going to get SloMo in free agency, and he considers himself primarily a PG (he averaged 6.5 assists per game at UCLA while Zach Lavine was getting 1.8!). I don't think I would have spent a first round pick on a PG that would be 4th on the depth chart, and especially not on one who was mostly projected to go in the second round. I love what Andrew is doing, but I wouldn't have been happy on draft night with the pick (or Ty Ty for that matter), and I don't know if he would have seen the court much here. And you gotta wonder if his 3-point shooting is sustainable...he was under 35% in college I believe.

Still hated that draft.

Good point about Kyle Anderson. I like JMac and Kyle as PGs who do a nice job of moving the ball and making good decisions.

This draft was interesting with some players various people liked on this board going either higher than expected or dropping lower. So far it seems clear there were a number of worthwhile players in the range where the Wolves drafted.

Let's see how Moore's career plays out. The concerns about Nembhard shooting the 3 probably were somewhat valid as he really only shot well from there his last year in college but of course the same can be said for Moore who is over 1.5 younger. It's interesting Nembhard is playing more as a SG than a PG. also worth noting how the Pacers seem to have done pretty well in the draft which isn't too surprising.

I'm always watching to see the undrafted guys in any class. That's gonna be an area where the Wolves are gonna be trying to find talent for a few years.

Also worth noting that the Wolves did add a Grizzlies guy Steve Senior to the front office. The Nuggets have done a pretty good job drafting too. I'd be happy if we have that kind of draft record.

Kessler has worked his way into Espns top 10 rookies list. Averaging 4.2 blocks/40 mins

I really liked Nembhard in college. But I would NOT have drafted him thinking he'd be a really good pro. The guy barely hit 10 ppg when playing 130+ college games. He seemed to be largely the same player as a senior as he was a freshman.

And most of all... he looked overmatched whenever facing quick, athletic guards (see Baylor, Arkansas and Duke).

At best, I thought he could be a Jordan McLaughlin type. I'm shocked at how he's doing right now.

Per 36:

Kessler: 13.2 pts / 12.0 reb / 3.9 blk
Gobert: 15.6 pts / 13.5 reb / 1.5 blk (career low)

[Note: I expect Gobert to go on a nice run here with Towns out... even if the first two games on his own wouldn't support that take.]
