The suns are not willing to give Ayton the max at the moment. Extention talks have no stalled. Per Woj

I don't think he's worth it but based on the rookie contact extension landscape I would balk as well if I were Ayton

DeAndre Ayton will get the max. Either Phoenix will offer him the max themselves, or Ayton will sign another team's max offer sheet as a restricted free agent and Phoenix will inevitably match.

Cam - It shouldn't come down to free agency. The Suns ownership should simply look Ayton in the eye and then give him the max. :)

Well, history might be repeating itself. On the other hand, Phoenix did pony up for Chris Paul. I'm all for watching the purse strings and staying below the luxury tax line when your team is in the lottery. But when your team just played in the NBA finals and is still young, that's when you loosen the purse strings and spend. Ayton is a max player because there's definitely at least one team, and probably more than one, who would offer him a max deal if given the chance. He's a max player because the market would likely say he is. I don't get the Suns' ownership getting stingy at this point.

Wow, surprised to hear this from Lip. IMO, this is exactly how the Wolves ended up with the Wiggins contract....ahem....

Max signing should have nothing to do with "what another team might or might not" do. It is only important if said player will contribute to the end team goal of winning.

You missed my point. The market determines whether someone's a max player. But that doesn't answer the question of whether your team should sign the guy. The answer depends, as you suggested, on the contribution that player makes or can be reasonably expected to make to your team.

As for Wiggins, I'm not sure any other team around the League was ready to give him a max contract. More importantly, there's a big difference between Ayton now and Wiggins back then. Ayton was a major contributor to a team that made the NBA finals last season. Wiggins was a what he was on a lottery team.

Jared Butler had 22 points and 4 assists for Utah last night. He hit 50% of his FG attempts and 43% from behind the arc. Note that he was the 40th pick in this year's draft. He was expected to be a 1st-round pick, but apparently dropped because of some medical condition. If his health holds up, he'll likely be the steal of this year's draft.

Dammit, Lip, you are 100% correct. Why the hell did Utah end up with him? Many of us must have fallen in love with this guy as he led his team to a national championship with no discernible flaws in his game. His handle is top notch, he shoots, and he's borderline elite on defense. And he goes 40th? You're right, he has a longtime heart issue that could eventually impact his career. But he's been playing with it for years, and it may not be an issue. If it's not, he's going to get big minutes backing up Conley, and eventually replace him. He's a steal.
