Today's rant -- Flopping 35 feet from the hoop vs. Driving hard to the hoop. Which one is better?

1. FLOPPING.

Oh oh. Apparently, other young guards are noticing, too. If you keep watching you see a couple of Grizzlies players noticeably frustrated. Apparently, Young's flopping 35 feet from the hoop vs. Morant's no-call drives was a big part of it. Young had ELEVEN free throws in the 4th quarter.

"It's just a lot of contact down there, which resulted in me being off balance when I shoot. So I missed a shot," Morant said. "As you see, I got a tech. That's what I got to do to get calls, then oh well."

So while Morant driving to the hoop is one of the league's most entertaining spectacles... WHY... should he continue it if he can just practice what Young and Harden are doing and save A LOT of energy and get more free throws?

I listened to KOC and Vernon today. Vernon mentioned this on the pod. Said Trey Young complains to the refs all game and he ended up getting the calls as the game went on

NBA refs get worse every year in this regard. There is no repercussion to them. The game flat out has bad rules right now that overprotect jump shooters and under protect guys going to the basket. Jump into a guy 24 ft from the basket and take 3 foul shots. Do it at the rim and get nothing. It's not complicated. Everyone knows what a normal jump shoot looks like compared to a foul seeking one.

Does anybody remember maybe 10 years ago, the league tried to do away with the constant complaining by basically banning it? I used to think of it as the Kobe rule because he would complain after every missed shot. It didn't last long for whatever reason. But I think the complaining today is worse than what had inspired that change 10 years ago. And the main reason it's worse is it works. Doncic works the officials from the opening tip until the final buzzer, and he gets a lot of calls because of it. The list is long, Blake Griffin, Lebron, Embiid, Harden, Westbrook and many others.

I wish they would just get rid of it, the game would be so much more entertaining. I would allow discussion between players and referees only during stoppages of play. And then only for clarification purposes. Any and all complaining would result in a technical foul. This would include gestures like throwing your hands or jumping up and down. Give the coaches 3 challenges per game. If you don't like a call, challenge it. But if you stop the game to challenge a call and lose the challenge, you also lose a timeout.

The advantage would be two-fold. One, the star players in the league would lose the leverage they currently have and the game would be officiated more fairly. And two, it would just be a much better product to watch.

I completely agree with all three of you on this. And I've love to see the League implement what Cool suggested.

Yikes. Hopefully they clean this B.S. up.

Sure. Sounds good to me.

But it's a superstar league. More than ever before... at least in how entitled they are. And there's a growing demographic of fans that care more about superstar players than teams... and they'll follow those superstars wherever they play.

So if the rules benefits the stars... and the whining benefits the stars... the stupid stuff stays.



[Note: Doncic was demanding these calls at 20... Young at 20 or 21... and they're getting them. We've ripped Towns often for whining behind the play... and Love before him. But are they really doing anything every other top player does? Not really. The Wolves guys just aren't as good at it.]

Young 14 - 16 on free throws tonight. Right on pace.

Interestingly... he's scored more points on flopping three pointers... than on actual three pointers... over the past three games. He's only 3 - 13 on the real ones.
