While it was heartening to see big Pek back out on the court playing again, the fact of the matter is he's a major liability right now. To hear that he is still playing in pain suggests that he's never going to get back to playing at a high level.

I was waiting for this news. And now that we have it, it's time to explore ways to get that salary off of our books. Maybe some of you can explain how a retirement due to injury might afford us some cap relief.

Yeah, we really need Pek to retire. It is starting to look like he will have to retire if he wants to be able to walk later in life. Based on the Brandon Roy situation a few years ago, Portland would have received full cap relief after 1 full year of not playing....but then the Wolves signed him...HA! So we would pay him again for next season, and then have his cap free for 2017/2018 season.

Pek isn't going to walk away from his contract without significant financial incentive. Do you think he'd be willing to restructure his contract to a lower number and then we release him. I think Larry Sanders and the Bucks did that.

Aren't NBA contracts guaranteed? Or, are you talking about some sort of injury/insurance settlement?

Most NBA contracts are guaranteed, but I'm talking about getting some financial relief and maybe cap relief as well going forward via restructuring Pek's contract or a settlement. AB and Larry Sanders took less money--not sure what the salary cap ramifications of Sanders settlement was.

Sanders took a buyout. Pek could retire due to the injury. They are handled differently. If Pek retires due to an injury, the NBA has to have a Dr. approve it, but there is a number of games played in the season that affects when the injury exception can be applied for. I think it is 10-12 games. So we are likely screwed for the upcoming season. Once they have played in the required amount, it is a one year waiting period, so we would likely not see cap relief until late next season. At that point the salary drops off our team number.
