Tyus Jones

With Flip's comment on wanting backcourt help in the draft, I did a quick stats analysis of the potential PGs that might drop to 31, or that we might move up to get. I wasn't interested in Rozier, but Grant, Wright, Payne or Jones were all very satisfactory.
I know Q was pretty luke warm on the Tyus pick. I have never watched him play! I just finished watching a bunch of highlight tapes and the DX scouting report. I swear I was watching Rubio-lite. I am very pleased with the pick and believe Jones will be able to facilitate our style of play when he subs in for Rubio. Nice job, Flip! Go suck an egg, Q... ;-)

Interesting article in the star today. I don't see him anywhere as good as passer. He is very special that part of the game. I don't see Jones ever being as good of a defender because he lacks the size Rubio does. I do think Jones will be a better shooter which is not a reach. If Rubio does get injured and Jones is thrust-ed into starting I think things would get ugly quickly.

I am glad we got Tyus Jones on the roster and I think he can handle filling in for Ricky as well as any rookie point guard. Sure he'll have some growing pains, but that's not a bad thing. While its nice if we make the playoffs next year, if we don't we can add another top draft pick. Looking past next year, I think he's going to be a good field general, have a good assist to turn over ratio, be able to shoot from the perimeter and be an ok help defender. If Rubio goes down I think he'll be able to hold down the fort well. But if not, there is plenty of point guard depth in the league to sign a veteran.

I'll say this abou the Tyus Jones pick...Filp is a PG guy and has some reasonable track record of developing those guys and maybe even identifying them. The Lorenzo Brown pick was even decent he has been hanging around the league getting on some rosters. Tyus fits a lot of what Flip historically has asked PGs to do lead, run the team, make decisions and he also has a jumper. If Flip likes him (some other teams seemed to like him too it seems for sure Houston did) that could indicate something positive. I'll be interested to see if he can improve his body over the next couple years. The idea he can't get it done as a rookie backup or if Rubio goes down...yeah maybe not but lots of Rookie PGs over the years have had plenty of success. I am looking forward to seeing how he looks in SL which is typically where guards go wild so we can see what he can do and also what kind of D he plays on some guys.

Listening to Kfan ( Justin Gaard) and they are saying how Tyus will compete for Rubio's minutes.

If it drops Rubio from 40 to 30-34 I'm all for it. None of our guys should be playing more than 36 a game and given Ricky's injury history I'm all for keeping him at a reasonable minute level.

Justin Gaard hates Rubio though, so you have to take that with a grain of salt. I like Tyus, but in year 1, there's zero chance he pushes Rubio for minutes. If Tyus pans out better than most expect, perhaps he will in the future, but not anytime real soon.

I am encouraged by Flips persistence to acquire Tyus since he knows pgs and that Tyus ranks well in analytics. Not every draft pick needs to be a starter though. Backups are valuable and I read that Flip even called him one. I think too often fans want to see their team built in a neat little package with exact minute distribution but it rarely works that way.

Flip the GM is also buying a few more years for Flip the coach by drafting a couple freshmen!
Well played Saunders. The fans will give you more time to "develop" these youngsters.
