Game Report: I have seen the light!

This is the first Wolves game I have attended live in a long, long time, with seats about 10 rows up behind the Wolves bench. Nice seats!

And here is the light I have seen: I doubt we even win 30 games this year. We will only win when a couple of guys catch fire to carry us to a win, or the opposing team goes into a sustained funk. But if both teams play to their mean, we will likely lose.

So why is this team broken? #1) it can't shoot, and #2) it sucks at defensive discipline. The contributing factors to these problems are youth, inexperience, and coaching. We can debate which of these contribute more, which means it's probably about equal shares of each.

#1) We can't shoot. We miss at an alarming rate in warmups. KG at age 40 still has the best touch of any player on this team. How sad is that? Rubio misses so badly it makes me wince. I don't know how the hell Dieng even hits a shot in a game. If we cannot hit shots at a high rate in warmups, how can we hit them in a game?

But even if we could hit shots at a decent rate, Mitchell's offense, or lack thereof, would bring down the rate during games. The only real ball movement comes from the vets that must know how important ball movement is to create open shots. But we see very little ball movement from our youth, so we do not get nearly as many wide open shots as opposing teams. How much of this is youth, and how much is Mitchell? I do not know, but it is big a problem.

And it does not help playing so many guys every night. It must be tough for most players to get into the flow of the game when minutes are so sparse. I guess this is a problem with having so many players that either deserve to play, or need to play in order to develop. Trade Martin? Bazz to the D-League? I do not know what the answer is, and it will likely continue for the remainder of the season (until injuries strike -- where are they when you need them!).

#2) We suck at defensive discipline. Maybe tonight was an anomaly, but we fouled a ton. It was largely due to laziness and/or stupidity (inexperience?). And when we were not fouling, we were giving up wide open shots. I see Sam is going with a lineup change tomorrow. My guess is LaVine will start for Kevin Martin. We will see. I highly recommend Mitchell's post game presser. He rambles on a lot about the issues listed above...

That 23 win prediction I had looks like it may hold up.

Just when I thought I'd be wrong...

Wolves continue to regress. Defense has been atrocious lately.

What a load of crap by Sam in that post game interview.

"At the moment we play basketball, but we aren't playing basketball"

Um Sam you coach the team so it's your job to get this team 'playing' basketball.

That was a really dumb comment by Sam. I was just pulling into my garage and feeling pretty good about his presser up until then, but that comment floored me.

Hey Tim -- Great you made it to the game tonight. You must have been sitting pretty close to me. Were you in section 132? What row?

Your observations were spot on. Now you know first hand what I've been seeing. And it's getting worse. We have the talent to finish significantly better than my preseason 23 game prediction. But my preseason prediction was predicated largely on what I saw in preseason and my view of Sam. It's not all Sam, but I think it's mostly Sam. We are underachieving given our talent level. Youth and inexperience? Sure, that's part of it. But the Thunder won 50 games with a younger, less experienced team than the one we have.

The one bright spot for the Wolves tonight was Zach: 20 points in 24 minutes on 44.5% FG shooting along with 1 block, 1 steal, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and only 2 turnovers. I'll note that Zach got significant minutes at SG tonight and played noticeably better during those minutes. How shocking. :)

I'll add Towns and Wiggins as positives. Towns struggled defensively against Denver's big guy, but I loved how Towns kept competing. He ended up with 18 efficient points along with 2 blocks, 6 boards and a couple incredible passes including a beautiful no-look to Prince. Then there was his rebound dunk over two defenders. Again, that's what I love about KAT. He's such a fiery competitor. Moreover, he has a complete skill set with no glaring weaknesses for his position. Then there was Wiggins. He scored 23 points, so I'll consider him a positive on that basis. But I do so reluctantly given yet another one-dimensional game from Andrew. He had 1 block, 1 assist and 1 rebound. And he had 3 turnovers as his shaky ball-handling was on full display again tonight. But in fairness, Sam's offense doesn't put Wiggins in the best possible position to succeed. He's expected to handle the ball far too much and I don't see many plays designed to play to his strengths. And again, he DID score 23 points.

I won't belabor the negatives. The defense was terrible. Why Kevin Martin played 22 minutes is inexplicable. Players passing up threes to take long twos. But I'll stop there. It all leads back to Sam anyway. And then there was Sam's press conference. Wow, more epic nonsense: "we play basketball, we aren't playing basketball." Huh???!!

That's it for now. Maybe we'll end up with enough lottery to have more than a remote chance at Ben Simmons. :)

LST - Sam wasn't impressing me at his presser even before he added to his list of idiocies. He sounded lost and frustrated. The only positive is he wasn't quite as pompous as he usually is. The guy just isn't very smart. It's that simple.

We shall call him Simple Sam after that interview.

Tim, Sorry you had to watch that mess last night live and in person. I will be there myself on the 26th for the game against Indiana. Luckily I'll be there with a bunch of family and we will have a good time whether the Wolves win or not!

I've been searching for why I think this team has been slipping so much defensively and I think you helped clarify it for me: A lack of discipline. The effort seems to be there for the most part, but yeah, they just have a really hard time staying disciplined over the course of a full possession. And like you, I have no idea if it's coaching, inexperience, or simple lack of skill. But getting stops has become a major problem for this team.

1. Ineffective coaching. Arguably, one of the worst coaching staffs in the league. Remember, it's not just Sam Mitchell. Sidney Lowe is a career coaching failure at every level. Adelman and Saunders are young and relatively inexperienced and possibly only there through family connections. All of them moved up one spot after Saunder's death. Saunders ran EVERYTHING. Mitchell was the lieutenant and now he's the main guy. The residual effects go down the line. Plus, it doesn't seem like there's any specialization going on. For example, Lowe isn't a defensive/offensive guru. Basically, they're all generalists... and not even senior level generalists.

2. Inexperience. This one should be expected. Sure, Garnett plays for 15 or so minutes most nights. And Rubio gets run. And even a bit of T. Prince. But the team is relying mostly on 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players who have learned a lot more about losing than winning. Every team goes through this. There was an interesting +/- stat or something here a few days ago. The old guard, even with their rapidly regressing skills on display, fared much better than the young guys who LOOK better on the court. It's about learning how to play. How to pick up the subtle nuances of the game and put it into action... consistently.

3. Identity. The team still doesn't have one. Heck, arguably the closest thing the team had to one came from Saunders and his blueprint for this team. Without him, the team is a bit lost. Is it Garnett's hardcore gristle? He only plays 15 minutes and is actively trying to hide from the action at times. Is it youthful exuberance? The middling fast break game and offensive sets lifted from a 1997 playbook seems to negate this one. Defensive intensity? The team was one of the worst ever last season. And it's struggling lately this season on that side. The schemes run are not complicated and seem to suggest "hard work" is all that's needed. Not in today's NBA. So where does that leave us?
