Wolves Cap Situation

I'm a bit confused about the Wolves current cap situation. According to Spottrac, the Wolves would be under the cap by about $4.2 million after counting our cap hold for Justin Patton if none of the cap holds for Bazz, Rush, Casspi and Payne are considered. I've been assuming we can renounce our rights to any of those players and knock their cap holds off the books. But according to Spottrac, that's not possible. I was thinking that we could renounce our cap holds on players who aren't under contract for next season and that the only downside would be losing our Bird rights to re-sign them in excess of the salary cap.

So here's my take. Best case scenario, we have bout $4.2 million in cap space if we renounce our claim to Rush, Payne and Casspi, having already renounced our rights to Bazz. We could presumably expand that to around $11.5 million by trading Aldrich and our pick for cap space. However, it would appear that we're stuck with all our cap holds for salary cap purposes, which means our only option is the room exception. If we can't clear those cap holds off our books, then even trading Aldrich and his $7.3 million contract would NOT get us below the salary cap. I have to believe we can renounce our cap holds and get their salaries off our books for cap purposes. Am I wrong?

Could someone explain what our options are regarding those cap holds?

I think it's just a glitch on their website. They've updated the salaries with Gibson's number, but have not removed Shabazz's number. So the "comment" about renouncing cap holds is the wrong comment.

You can see at the bottom the "Practical Cap Space" is $6,555,767. But that includes releasing Justin Patton, which we will not do.

Thanks, Tim! That makes sense. So renouncing all our cap holds except Justin Patton's would leave us around $4.5 million in cap space. That could be useful.

I assume they have yet to remove those guys because they are not officially renounced yet, just like none of the signings are official yet either. I believe that all happens when FA officially starts on the 6th. Remember how Deandre Jordan backed out at the 23.5 hour? Anything could happen between now and then.

As I mentioned in another thread the Wolves only have 10 players under contract and you have to have a minimum of 12 guys under contract so it sounds like there is a cap hold for those roster spots. Let's say that a cap hold was even $750,000 each roster spot (I think it's more) that would knock their cap room down to 3 million-ish $$$ and for a guy like Dunlevey I believe I saw somewhere they make more on the vet min now it's over 2 million bucks so only fairly in experienced players would get too excited about getting extra money over a vet min deal from whatever cap space they have left. It makes sense to try and add to it if it's worth it.

It would make sense to at least explore moving Aldrich with the pick in case someone ends up being available either via FA or in a trade. They may not end up seeing a player worth making the move but it makes sense to do the work in case a no brainer option is out there and maybe a team sends back a 2nd rounder or something in the deal for Adlich and the 1st so at least you would get some chance to get a player later.
