I recommend you read the whole article, but this one line stuck out to me.

"There's no shame in paying someone if the money has to go somewhere -- the problem comes if it's not available when you really need it."

On one hand, signing shorter contracts would give us that future cap space. On the other, we could be passing up a shot at a contract that will actually appear reasonable when the cap jumps again next year.

Some of us seem more eager to spend for a free agent now, and some of us less so. But I suspect we can all agree on this: Whatever decision we make in free agency this year, we have to save the financial ability to keep our key players when they hit free agency in the next few years.

Thanks for that, Drew. I especially enjoyed the link in the article to 20 Things You Don't Know about Selma Hayek...I now know 18 more things about her than I did yesterday!

The author talks about how some of these weird contracts may seem like bargains in a few years as the cap goes up (and cites Rubio's contract as an example), but misses one key point. Yes, the cap is expected to jump up again next year (to $109 million), but then is projected to actually decrease to $102 million for 2018-9 and stay relatively stable for a few years. This means that free agents are going to try to enter into their long-term contracts next year, and those contracts are never going to seem like bargains like Ricky's does now.

None of these contracts are gonna actually be bargains. They're still signing for 15-25% of even next year's cap which is good starter level money.

Yeah, I think there are some big miscalculations being made by a lot of these teams. One thing we need to do is get Gorgui locked up asap.

Also I'll add something stupid Simmons said on his latest Friday Rolling podcast. He said all you have to think about is if you divide these contracts by two that's what they would be in a normal year. The problem with that is the cap at most is only getting 33-36% higher than what it was so paying a guy twice as much as normal is a 14-17% overpay for what the cap is actually doing and I think teams are of the Simmons mindset.

I always get sucked into the "20 actresses you didn't know were lesbians"....... and the 4th one is like Jodie Foster. Or the "20 foods you need to start eating"....and the 4th is like Broccoli. Thanks for the info, internet.
