Top-13 Draft Pick Protection...

Is the worst thing in the world. Is there anything worse than the Wolves putting on a run to finish the season but just missing the playoffs AND losing the pick? I mean, we would likely blow the pick/not play whoever we drafted, but it would still be nice to have.

There's no disputing that it was a bonehead move by kahn, shahidi, that gives us another thing to worry about. But I see it as unlikely that we end up in that dreaded 14th spot. We're still 4 games behind Memphis who is playing well, and it's going to be difficult to pass them. I think the Wolves finish strong this year, but still get the 13th pick in a strong draft.

I agree with Long. But what a horrible outcome if we end up #14!!

Nightmare...Kahn's final gift to us long-suffering fans!

Yes, Kahn's parting gift. As much as I've criticized Flip, I wish we had Flip's mediocrity instead of Kahn the previous three years!! We'd likely be much better off.

Is it true that the pick transitions to 2 seconds if we don't have to give it up this year?

I wish. According to RealGM...

2014 first round draft pick to Phoenix
Minnesota's 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-13 in 2014, 1-12 in 2015 or 1-12 in 2016; if Minnesota has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Phoenix by 2016, then Minnesota will instead convey its 2016 2nd round pick and 2017 2nd round pick to Phoenix [Minnesota-New Orleans-Phoenix, 7/27/2012]

Well I guess if Love leaves, we probably won't have to give up a #1.

Not necessarily, cool. A pessimist could see it playing out like this. Wolves get the 13th pick this year, and improve just enough to make the playoffs in 2015, but not enough to convince Love to stay. We lose our pick to Phoenix in 2015, and Love to free agency.

I'm just presenting a worst case, and it's not too much of a stretch. Personally, though, I think Love is staying.

I think he'll stay if we make the playoffs. If we don't, I wouldn't be surprised if he left
