Last roster spot

Jaylen Clark seems to be reporting on his YouTube that he will sign a 2-way deal. If so that means the Wolves have last vet min salary spot open they could fill.

Who would you want at that spot?

I’m not in a hurry to fill that spot. One possible option wound be leaving it open in case someone blows you away in training camp or something. If it’s a rookie you might sign them to the cheap 3 year deal where the first year is just a little over 1 million which would give the Wolves a little wiggle room under the luxury tax.

Another option would be signing a guy (most likely a vet) to a partially or totally non-guaranteed deal. Think an Austin Rivers type.

I saw on Twitter there was a suggestion that the Wolves could even bring Nowell back as he may not have any better options. Part of me likes the sound of that as I do still believe in his talent. On the other hand…where is the guy gonna play? Is there another guy sorta like Nowell who maybe is talented but teams aren’t exactly clamoring for them? Bol Bol?

What about Derrick Jones Jr for the vet min maybe on a partially guaranteed deal?

Nerlens Noel is 29 and might have something left in the tank if we want a shot blocker and rim protector for special situations like Rudy is in foul trouble or out. I'm sure he's a minimal contract at this point.

In know Doogie said the wolves have no interest in bringing Nowell back but would help with a sign and trade if possible.

I say let’s see how the SL goes and see if anyone pops off. I don’t think it would happen but I would be cool with either Rivers or Knight returning but I’m for keeping that roster spot open at the moment

I hope we move on from Nowell, Rivers and Knight unless we need someone familiar with the Wolves system in case of injury. I like scouting the Summer League for someone who stands out.

If we don't keep Wendell Moore, there is another available roster spot. In that case, I'd look for a young point guard prospect to develop. I'm still intrigued by Kennedy Chandler who showed he can pass and be disruptive on defense with lots of steals in his one year of college at Tennessee and his one year in G League. He was a plus 11.7 per game in the G League, with 6.7 assists and 1.7 steals, 46% field goal shooting overall, though, his three point shot was only 20.7% (however, he was much better in college at 38.3%). Chandler is still 20 years old. I also like Mac McClung as he is more polished and shoots the three well (47.4% last year) but he is a bit older, 24. I'm also keeping my eye on JD Davidson (21 yo) and Theo Maledon (22 yo), who are restricted free agents and also Ty Ty Washington (21 yo) who was dumped in a trade along with another player to Atlanta along with some picks presumably to open up roster space. Perhaps some other point guard candidates will emerge during summer league.

Moore has a guaranteed contract.

Edit: I think you are right. I guess the October deadline is for the following season. Can we cut him and replace him with a minimum salaried player or are we stuck with him for another year?

I'm not the biggest fan of his game but I wouldn't mind signing Austin Rivers to another vet min. He is a good veteran locker room presence and we have quite a bit of young talent who won't get many minutes this season. I'd like to have Rivers in their ear on the bench during games!

I think we should keep that 15th roster spot open for someone who becomes available later in the season or to elevate one of our 2-way contract players to make room for adding a new 2-way contract player from our Summer League or G-League roster. After watching tonight’s Summer League game against the Pelicans, I’d like the Wolves to consider giving their third 2-way deal to Brandon Williams.

I agree with keeping that 15th roster spot open for now. Regarding Brandon Williams - he flashed in game one of the Summer, but let's see how he does the rest of the games. I think after the summer season is over we can better evaluate some of these guys.
