Ricky Rubio

I just read an article that suggested TC ought to check in with Ricky Rubio to see if he wants to return to NBA for the upcoming season as he contemplates resuming his basketball career. Rubio played with several of the current Wolves either while in Minnesota or Utah. He's still younger at 33 than Conley and Ingles and I'd prefer him over either vacant spot or PJ Dozier. And Ricky is one of the fan favorites who many of us would love see get a ring, even if he's just veteran insurance at point guard and a second mentor to RD. The Rubio angle occurred to me a while ago. But I didn’t think it was worth mentioning because of the reasons Ricky had to take a break from basketball. I know he is playing again, but I gotta think he is happy where he is…

But it would be really cool and I am on board! He is better than anything left on the market right now!

(which is why I am okay with Dozier - he can play make and play defense and is versatile to guard 3 positions. Show me someone better on the market right now)

Rubio isn't even playing for the Spanish National team in the Olympics so that makes me think a return to the NBA seems unlikely. Besides don't the Cavs still own his rights? They might want him back. He loved it there although it's a new coach. I would guess if Rubio really wanted to go to MN they would do what was needed to make it happen. I would not get your hopes up.

Even though Ricky is one of my all-time favorite Wolves, I think he's pretty washed at this point. He has not looked good for a few years now (including his brief stint with Barca last year). Every player ages differently and he's just one of these guys that flamed out in his early 30s, both mentally and physically. Not that surprising seeing as he had been playing pro ball since he was a young teenager.

I believe, with the contact buyout Cleveland did, that Ricky is an unrestricted free agent.

Thanks I had forgotten he had done a buyout so I was incorrect. Still I will not get my hopes up. Mostly I just wish the best for Ricky. It would be a really cool story of he came back and helped the Wolves.

Rubio played 10 years in the league so he is eligible for healthcare and the maximum pension from the NBA. He is also eligible for over $30,000 per year to help with getting a degree if he would like. I could definitely see Rubio getting some kind of education and down the road doing something completely outside of basketball.

I don't think there's a chance in hell he comes back now knowing he's not playing for the Olympic team.
