Lynx in the finals

Full disclosure: I haven't been much of a WNBA fan in the past, and I'm still a little casual. But I'm also a Minnesota sports rube, and we have a team in the finals. So after I deemed the AL playoff game out of reach, I switched over to ESPN to find our local team down double digits to the hated NY Liberty with just minutes to play. Good move. I got to watch one of the greatest finishes to a game (plus OT) that I have ever seen...with our girls coming up on top when NY's star missed a contested layup that could have sent the game to a second OT. So now I'm hooked and plan to watch a lot more of this series. Napheesa Collier is unbelievable (she hit the winning bucket in OT on a turnaround jumper in the lane with two or three defenders draped on her). And Courtney Williams was sensational in engineering the 4th quarter comeback.

We're the underdogs, but this team is fun. Anybody else watch last night?

I did not watch the game, but I was checking the score and saw that they pulled it out. Great win.

I respect Cheryl Reeve as a coach, but I've generally not been a big fan of the WNBA as it has historically seemed even more politicized than the NBA, and that's saying a lot!

I’ve always been a big WNBA fan, I’m basketball junkie. It was an all time great game. First team in WNBA history to come back by 15 with less than 5 minutes left.

Collier is the hub for everything and she is so good on both ends, she is not an iso player. Best player in the W. Also if you don’t watch games and watch a random wolves game Courtney Williams is either the best player ever or terrible no in between. We got the elite Williams yesterday.

Also I thought the Lynx were going to be terrible this year, I was upset when they were winning early because I wanted Paige in the draft. Props to Reeve for finding under the radar players that fit a system to make this team great. I mean last year number 2 pick does not even play

Sunday will be a very interesting day for me.

Sunday morning I'll be at Brooklyn Nets open practice. It'll be out in the park, free for whoever. They'll be bad but Nets fans have a way of embracing guys in rebuilds as long as there may be a future for em, so Cam Thomas will be treated like THE guy as long as he's there until they hit it big in the lottery.

After that, Lynx /Liberty game 2 at Barclays. I got decent seats and I'm hoping the Lynx pull off game 2 to really send Liberty fans into a panic (got love for the Liberty, but I pull for the Lynx).

RIGHT after that, I gotta get on a train and in half an hour, get to MSG for T'Wolves /Knicks preseason. It's preseason and the official return for DiVincenzo and Randle won't be til January 17, but let's be real, it'll be the first time they're back and they'll get their flowers then. I've already seen Knicks Towns jerseys being sold and it does look weird. Recently it feels like they either play the Knicks or Nets which benefits me, so keep it up, but even with everything else going on in NYC these days (GO YANKEES), this might be the first ever WNBA/NBA doubleheader with the same teams from the same cities, at least for us, so I can't wait for Sunday.

Good to have another Lynx fan here, Kek...the rest of this series could be special. Like I said, I haven't watched the team much this year, so I didn't know that much about Williams. I cringed when she put up that 3 pointer late in the 4th quarter that tied the game, and my instincts were correct...she only made 33% of them during the season. But she made it. In fact, I don't think we come back to win this game without her exceptional 4th quarter play.

This is going to be a tough series with NY having such a height advantage...44-32 rebound advantage in Game 1 and 20-5 in offensive boards. Ouch. But we won the first one, so we just might do it.

It was really interesting that with the height/rebounding issues, Cheryl opted to go small with Williams and heideman for a stretch and it gave us a spark. I wonder if Dorka will get some run since she’s the only other real viable option with the height. Is incredible what phee can do on defense giving up 3-4 inches consistently to the players she’s assigned to, and her fadeaway game is so good.

Dorka might get a chance. She did play a little bit in the Suns series. I just don’t think Cheryl cares about the rebounding issues though. They have decided to have 5 players who can all shoot over height this season

The last few weeks I had been watching some of the extended highlights of a few games and I it's been fun to see this group of players. A number of them are reclamation projects or at the very least players playing well above what they had in precious seasons. It's pretty impressive how the Lynx organization has been able to rebuild and retool multiple times now and it's not like they have nailed every move. It's easier with a smaller league but still. I'm always a little annoyed that I don't fallow them more.

I had wanted to go to a WNBA finals game if the Lynx made it but they are all weekday games and it's unfortunately not gonna work out.
