Athletic NBA Power Rankings

After the draft, free agency and summer league, the Athletic still has the Wolves as the 4th best team in the league, which frankly surprised me. Here is their write up:

4. Minnesota Timberwolves

Last ranking: 4
Free agency: PF Julius Randle (re-signed), C Naz Reid (re-signed), PG Joe Ingles (re-signed)
Additions: C Joan Beringer (draft)
Departures: SG Nickeil Alexander-Walker (trade), C Luka Garza, SF Josh Minott

Midsummer summary: Two out of three isn’t bad. Minnesota kept the frontcourt together by re-signing Randle and Reid. It wound up losing Alexander-Walker, but Minnesota has three players who could vie for Alexander-Walker’s minutes in Terrence Shannon Jr., Jaylen Clark and Rob Dillingham. Minnesota also used a first-round pick on center Joan Beringer to replace Garza. Minnesota lost combo forward Minott, so there’s a spot for another forward that Minnesota should look to add. Overall, Minnesota is in a good position to attempt to win the West after losing back-to-back conference finals.

4th seems generous! Almost every contender in the West got better on paper (Denver and Houston for sure). We basically are relying on cohesion and youth upside. Which could happen, but may not too.

I'm not even counting out the Mavs or SA also. Even the Lakers if Ayton plays well are dangerous now.

We're in the mix but it's going to be tough with all the good/great teams.

Right… i’m pretty bullish on this team, but I’m not entirely sure the Wolves are the 4th best team in the West, let alone the league :-)

One thing is pretty clear to me...the Wolves are more highly regarded nationally than they are on this board! I think they put more weight on our last 21 games of the season and our two winning playoff series than they do our series against OkC.

I also have them 4th, but I have the first three OkC, Cleveland and Houston. I'm not as high on the Knicks as they are, and I still like us better than Denver.

As good as every team has gotten all of them have questions about their roster too. A lot of teams have guys that have issues staying healthy or old or both. Some teams need some young guys to step up their game like the Wolves do. Denver has a good roster but is David Adelman an actual good NBA head coach? I'm a little skeptical about the Lakers for a few reasons and I'm not convinced Redick is a really good coach. Also will they be able to defend? With a new owner will anything change over there that isn't anticipated?

The Wolves have a pretty talented roster. Not everyone loves the fit or whatever but Edwards Randle Gobert and McDaniels are 4 pretty good players and there is talent beyond those guys. I think there is also some level of confidence in the Wolves as an organization that we aren't used to seeing expected from some of the people making these rankings. The Wolves are also bringing back basically the same group. They should have some level of continuity on their side which has a potential to matter. Some of these other improving teams have quite a few guys to integrate and they aren't just role players.

I really don't care about these rankings especially when the offseason isn't totally complete. There are so many teams in the west that are potentially good that idk how I would rank them much less figuring out what other people think. It's a fun talker though.

The question that pops up in my mind is if it were the Wolves that added the players that these other "improving" teams added, would we be as bullish on the Wolves?

I don't think so, personally.

Tim Hardaway, Jonas V, Marcus Smart, DeAndre Ayton, John Collins. Heck even CP3 or KD have had resistance on this board before.

Why is it when these guys go to the opposition, we have so much remorse?

With how much heat Doncic has taken I kind of see a MVP type of year from him, he has been looking really fit in the workout vids. Time will tell if it lasts, however, I'm not counting him out for sure. The amount of heat on him is real. I think it either he steps up or it goes badly.

IF healthy the Clips look very good also. Yes they're an old team, but man they are deeeeep. So they can take a couple guys off a night and no sweat.

He looks good every offseason. Maybe he is even better this year. Regardless he is still gonna be a good player if healthy.

I think the guy that could really make the Lakers better is if Ayton actually plays well. All that negative stuff that was written about him some of it had to be true. There were definitely some issues when he was with the Suns.

He could be a very good player especially playing with Doncic. You're right, the amount of care or try hard is the ultimate question with him. He's kind of just relied on his talent to get by to this point. The upside is big thought if they can get a better Doncic and Ayton. I guess we'll see.
