Yikes! But this is the devil pro sports has brought to the dance, front and center. They didn't think players/coaches could get corrupted by it? We'll wait for the details I guess....

I'm sure some guys get away with it, for NBA guys is it really worth tanking a few games a year to make a little extra scratch? You can't bet too much otherwise it raises red flags. Through a trusted friend and cut them in, pretty easy. But seems illogical. As a ref I think it makes much more sense. Don't make much, so many calls or 50/50. Even other sports too. MLB umpire? Sheesh, how easy is that to rig? Football? Call a few extra holds on one team and none on the other and thats a tremendous swing.

I'm skeptical of anyone who doesn't enjoy a vice or two.
But partnering with gambling was such a huge mistake for pro sports.
This is just not an area where you can blur the line at all without it coming back to haunt you. It's just not worth the money it brings the league (and I know it's a lot).
I just pray this doesn't end up getting looked back at like the steroid era in baseball.

Here's a copy of the indictment.

Not sure how many times people can access that link, since it's a "gifted" article behind a paywall, but check it out.

"The fraudulent wagering scheme typically involved various iterations of
the same pattern within a network of co-conspirators. The defendants and certain co-
conspirators had access to private information known by NBA players or NBA coaches that was
likely to affect the outcome of upcoming NBA games or individual players' performances.
They provided other co-conspirators this non-public information- in exchange for either a flat
fee or a share in expected wagering profits--for the purpose of betting. The co-conspirators
disseminated the non-public betting information through a network of individuals who placed
bets on the co-conspirators' behalf, placed wagers on their own behalf, or directed others to place
wagers, all with the intention of profiting off the scheme at the expense of the Betting
Companies. As a result, many of the wagers were placed in connection with betting lines that
did not reflect or account for the private information known by the defendants and their co-
conspirators, rendering the wagers more profitable."

Sounds like Chauncey (co-conspirator 8?) tipped guys off that they were going to sit their best players before publicly announcing it down the stretch in a 2023 game.
Damon Jones is alleged to have done the same while an assistant for the Magic.
The indictment also contains some of the accusations about Rosier and Johntay Porter that were already publicly known.

You simply can't do it over the phone, which I assume they did. You can get away with it person to person I'm sure (leave your phone at home it can obviously track and listen). Foolish clowns really. Coaches and players are making so much it's silly for them to gamble or sell gamblers info. I get it, it's exciting and entertaining, but without some really smart precautions, you're going to easily get caught.

Such an odd story. Billups is paid over $5million a year and made over $100 million as a player, so how much was he being paid here? I've always admired him as a class act, so I hope this turns out to be nothing.
