2026 draft

Yeah, I know…we’re still in the playoffs with a chance to get to the finals again. But the draft is just weeks away, and we have a pick. So let’s use this thread for draft talk.

It loaded, and yes…some more gifted athletes are coming to the West. But you never know with draft picks…just go back and review some of our klunkers over the years. And I have to admit I chuckled when I saw my first mock having the always injured Darryn Peterson going to the always injury-ravaged Jazz…what could go wrong, Danny?

As for our Wolves, a mock I saw had them taking Ebuka Okorie late in the first round, a 6-2 PG out of Stanford. My first thought was “yes, please”. My second was “nah, too good to be available that late”. We’ll have to see. What we plan to do with the current roster will likely have an impact on who we target. Right now my knee jerk choice is Okorie.

I literally came here this morning with the urge to nostalgically revert to the loser ways of yesteryear and see what the draft gods have in store for us. It’s bitter sweet to have such success currently and not be able to dig into the lottery projected players with the hope they might wear a wolves jersey. This year there can’t be any realistic hope of moving up right? We’ve learned our lesson and taken away Tim Connelly trade up machine keys yeah?

The thought has occurred to me on more than one occasion that our 1st round pick might be needed to turn Randle into something else...

Assuming we keep both picks (and they should. They must get contributions from their cheaper guys, especially with DDV out next year.

the top guy for me at 28 assuming he's there is Joshua Jefferson from Iowa State. I know they could use a PG, but the ones that would be left outside of Meleek Thomas and Sergio de Larrea are really short and really poor on defense. They can't go that route again (and both those guys are ticketed for G League if they get picked here). Joshua Jefferson is crafty. He can fill up a stat sheet. He's 23, so he's plug and play and if we're gonna move Randle, it's good to have a backup for Reid who can excel in the half court which works well with Ant. If Kyle stays on a vet min, awesome guy to learn from as we know Slo-Mo isn't very athletic but effective and gets to his spots.

guards:
Meleek Thomas
Sergio de Larrea

I'm very iffy on Christian Anderson. Talented, but he's a turnover machine and he's small. If you're gonna consider Christian Anderson, bring back Tyus Jones on the cheap.

Wings:
at this point, just embolden Shannon and give him that run now that DDV is out.

Alex Karaban could be of help with his shooting and he's also older.
Milan Momcilovic, big time shooter. He could step in and make 100-150 threes in his rookie year, but he's kinda just a shooter.

Allen Graves would be awesome but he's gonna be a draft riser. Had we not swapped, this would be the Allen Graves thread.

no centers, though I like Zuby Ejiofor as a Randle substitute and backup to Reid. Also like him as a small ball 5 if Beringer still needs more time.

OKC didn't move up, so they are sitting at 12 and 17 which should land good players, but I have heard they may look to trade one or both for future picks, since don't have space for another guys at the moment. I doubt OKC would trade with us, and I'm not sure if Tim is confident trading up high again using the 2033 first round pick like he did for Rob. There is legit guys there at 12 to take. I do really like this draft, I just wish we had our 21st pick instead of 28th in that Conley trade. TSJ is starting to show his talent again, which might be a win for Tim, and Joan has all the potential in the world, so his drafting for us might be looking better than it did.

I was just thinking this weekend that the draft must be coming up soon since the Summer league is early July. I need to book my lodging still...

The Wolves have various FAs and things to consider. Is Bones gone? Does Jaylen Clark get an offer from a team and leave? Is Kyle Anderson wanting to stay? Do the Wolves feel like they need a roster spot to sign someone from their 2-way guys? Will Conley be coming back? All these considerations could affect what they do with their picks to some extent. I'd guess if they keep their later 2nd rounder that guy is likely to be looking at signing a 2-way deal.

I have very little idea of the prospects in this draft. A guard that can handle the ball and or shoot sounds good. A promising PF type makes a lot of sense. Honestly other than a young center I'm not sure I would rule too much of anything out.

Don’t be surprised if the wolves use the pick as a trade chip.

On draft night they can trade #27 pick, 28 pick swap, 29 1st (pick 6-30), 32 pick swap and 33 1st

Not saying they are the greatest assets ever but don’t be surprised if they package multiple picks in a big trade

this team also can't keep robbing Peter to pay Paul. That's gonna come back and haunt us big time if we keep trying to ensure that the cupboard is forever bare.

TC is gonna have to figure out who can contribute on the cheap via free agency as well as the draft (and that may come in the form of a Randle trade for bench depth)

I'm less concerned with a particular position but I would look for someone who has good size for their position, rebounds and defends their position, can hit shots off the catch and has a high motor. The Wolves have room for those types.

WW, nbadraft.net has us taking Momcilovic. He is a terrific shooter. bit I agree with you...not much else. The Iowa State guy you like probably won't be around for us, unless he's a victim of the "too old" thing.
