Trade deadline news

Let's see what happens today. Terry Ryan has already made one deal, and it looks like a major steal for the Twins...getting Timmy Milone for Sam Fuld. I recognize that Milone is a pitch to contact guy, but the Twins need a lefty in the rotation and Milone's stats are solid. Fuld is a gutsy defensive outfielder, but has always had a weak bat. Plus I was getting tired of his whining as he repeatedly took called third strikes. I don't think we will see Alex Meyer this year, so Milone will be our 5th starter instead of the parade of AAA guys we have seen.
I expect some Correia news next.

I love the Milone trade. Get a mid-rotation pitcher for a utility outfielder? You make that trade every time. In four seasons with the Nationals and A's, 27-year-old Tommy Milone is 32-22 with a 3.84 ERA. I'll take that.
It also opened the door for Kennys Vargas to get the call up.

Totally agree, cam...trade seems wildly unbalanced to me. From Oakland's perspective, they're so loaded with starting pitchers, there was almost no chance of Milone starting there. Plus his numbers away from Oakland were not nearly as good as his home stats (although still better than all of our current starters' road stats!). But we gave up almost nothing in Fuld.
Vargas hasn't been hitting recently, but I'm really excited about this call up...he could be a big part of our bright future.

What is your guys opinion on what Oakland is doing at the trade deadline so far? I'm pretty perplexed by it.

Pitching is HUGE in the playoffs. I think they're coming out of the AL now. Lester-Samardzija-Gray-Kazmir-Hammel rotation. That's filthy. Gave up Cespedes, who's a FA after this season I think, but they can platoon a spot in the OF and maintain good run production. They got Gomes in the trade for Lester as well. Oakland's in business.

Yeah, I don't question Oakland very often, and I like the Lester trade. He steps up in the post-season, and actually is pitching really well this season too. As Cam said, they probably weren't going to retain Cespedes anyway. Beane is all in on winning the WS this year, and I think he has a chance.

Oh I thought Cespedes had one more on his contract after this year

Tigers just gave the big F U to Oakland and acquire David Price for Austin Jackson and Drew Smyly

Boy I think the Red Sox came out good at the Dead line they were able to flip two older pitchers, one in Lester who believes he's worth more money than he's and get Cespedes Allen Craig and Joe Kelly pretty damn good haul, for a team who in the off season can just reload there pitching staff.

I know he hasn't been sharp this year, but most teams would be satisfied with Jason Verlander as their #5 starter!
