Twins trade for Jaime Garcia

It's nice to see the new brain trust being buyers rather than sellers, and Garcia has always been a reliable starter (albeit in the NL). But we gave up a prospect to be named later for him, and rumors are it might be one of my favorites...Lewis Thorpe. If so, I'm not in favor of this deal...Thorpe has the potential to be a stud.

Update: Mike Berardino says they don't expect to complete the deal tonight, but they are very close. I'm guessing they are debating who the prospect will be.

I'm trying to get info but im getting nothing. I don't hate the move or like the move it's the type of meh move I expect them to make. If it's Thorpe I consider this a really bad deal there are rumors that twins are getting a low level prospect back in the trade.

Ugh I hope we didn't give up someone better because the Braves are going to pay almost half his salary

Yeah, I hope that's not a factor too, jester. My opinion is dependent upon who we give up. Garcia is an average starter in the last year of his deal, and that just doesn't add up to a top 20 prospect in my opinion. But on the other hand, I'm not sure the Braves make this deal without getting a top 20 back. We'll just have to see how this plays out.

It sounds like the Twins always check out the medical school and what I have read that's been an issue for Garcia. Like it's been said let's see who they give up.

I'm being told by my sources and people I trust that's it's not a top 20 prospect

Heading to bed now but what I've been told by somebody close to the orgnzation is that the deal is done. He can't reveal the player to me but assured me it's someone out of the top 20 but the hang up right now is how much the braves will pay on Garcia contract.

Thanks for the info Jester.
I'm not a great baseball mind but just looking at Garcia his history with injuries and his up and down effectiveness I can't see how at this point he would fetch anything too significant unless there was a bidding war of a couple teams wanting him. I don't get the sense that is the case. I'm not saying this move sucks because if he is healthy he is obviously likely an upgrade and there seems to be some small legit possibility he gets back to the guy he was a couple years ago at least for a stretch and is a really nice piece. If the price to pay is a random dude I may have not even heard of before than it's a no-brainer. It's the type of move Wetmore has been advocating for since sometime in June. Lol
Also if all they are fighting about now is money it will get done. I'm always a bit surprised when that seems to be such an issue for some of these deals. I get it 2 million bucks or whatever (sometimes a lot more than that) is still a lot of money but yeah. Of course when you have the ability for a team to be able to pay part of the salary then it's a reasonable point of negotiation. It's just a different world than the other sports I have followed more closely the last few years.

Looks like Garcia is starting tonight against the dodgers and the deal is on hold. Atlanta has apparently opened the trade up to all parties (why wouldn't they have done that from the start?), so the asking price should go up. I'm guessing this deal doesn't happen, despite my jump-the-gun thread title.
