Yanks reject Brandon Phillips offer

Can someone tell me why the Yankees wouldn't do this. What are they thinking besides him having a bad year at the plate last year. Do they forget they play at Yankee stadium where all numbers inflate and especially for Gardner which they have no need for him now with elisbury and Beltran now.
