Ryan Doumit To The Braves

"The Braves have acquired Ryan Doumit from the Twins in exchange for left-hander Sean Gilmartin, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports."

"Gilmartin, 23, entered the 2013 season ranked as the Braves' No. 4 prospect, per Baseball America, and their No. 3 prospect, per MLB.com. Though he suffered a down year, BA still ranked him 10th among Braves prospects, and MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo kept his ranking strong at No. 4."

"The Twins have confirmed the trade via press release. Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN reports that the Braves are taking on all of Doumit's $3.5MM salary."

"Gilmartin struggled through injuries and posted a 5.06 ERA across three levels in 2013, averaging 6.9 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in a total of 105 innings. Selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Gilmartin draws praise for his polish from both BA and MLB.com. BA writes that his 89-91 mph fastball has good movement and is complemented by a plus changeup and a slider with "sharp, late break." According to Mayo, "[Gilmartin's] ceiling is somewhat limited, but he's not far from being ready to step in as a middle-of-the-rotation type in the big leagues."

I LOVE this trade. We open a roster spot for Pelfrey, meaning no one else has to go. I also never thought Doumit's trade value was that high so receiving another team's top-10 prospect seems like a gift to me. Even if Gilmartin's just another Scott Diamond, I'll take it.

So Gilmartin goes from a prospect ranking of number 10 in the Braves to number 21 (at best) with the Twins per John Manuel. Goes to show the strength of our farm as well.

Also gives the Twins the go-ahead to sign Suzuki or Buck as a platoon catcher with Pinto. Terry Ryan made a very good move today.

I like it too, but I can't help but think the Yanks would have matched it. They were last in the AL in RF OPS. Doumit would have been their best RF last year.

"Just another Scott Diamond"? A healthy Diamond is STILL the Twins best starter.

Yankees have Gardner, Ellsbury and Beltran in their outfield right now. Unless they wanted a bench bat in Doumit, why would they trade for him? Also have Soriano on the bench.

How do you figure? He's had one good year and then the league figured him out with ease.

Whoops. Forgot about Beltran.

Also forgot to mention how this clears up more at bats for Arcia.

The league didn't FIGURE OUT Diamond, unless by "figure out" you mean "got injured".

This is all true. But they were last in RF OPS.

Related: If Arcia is able to extrapolate JUST the OPS he had playing RF last year into a full year this year, he will probably be the AL leader.

Question for the Board: Is there a market for Collabelo, or is anyone hoping he has the makeup to be the full time DH?

I kike the trade but they still have a lot of work to do finding MLB bats.... Who's the starting catcher? and 2nd base/SS/ and the outfield could all use upgrades...Would be nice to see some POWER in the lineup.. Who is our DH?

A 30 year old, second year MLB player who hit under .200 last year? There's zero market for him. He's a bench bat for us or maybe he gets cut.

Starting catcher will likely be Pinto with John Buck getting some here or there. Yes, I'm assuming we sign him. 15-20 HR guy a year who has a history with Nolasco at least.

Dozier's a good baseball player. Should have won a Gold Glove last year and has above average pop for a second baseman. Really like him as a clubhouse guy too.

Florimon could be upgraded, but how? There's no reasonable move that the Twins should do for this position except wait for a young pup to come through the farm (Santana?). Florimon's also a hell of a defender so at least that's something.

If I was the manager, which I'm not unfortunately, I'd have Hicks in center, Arcia in left and Parmalee in right. We need to find out once and for all if Parmalee can hang in the bigs. Plus he's played that right field position pretty well to my eyes. Willingham as the full time DH until the trade deadline, then deal him. Presley as the fourth OF.

They could also decide to have Hicks work in AAA to start the year so Presley could be the CF and Mastroianni be the fourth OF.

Our upgrades are 19-23 year olds growing in the farm. Give it time. I'm hoping for .500 baseball next year given the upgrades to the rotation and possible development of Pinto/Hicks/Parmalee/Dozier/Florimon and even Mauer being healthier.
