Even though I love what we could do with Bush. If Zimmer thinks we are set at the OL and we have another poor year it is time to fire him.
It's my gut feeling on how Zimmer will approach the draft. My opinion is if your gonna pay top dollar for a QB you better spend all your resources protecting him and putting skill players around him. We have a lot of money invested in players that haven't gotten it done when it counts. Hopefully this draft finds the last couple pieces.
If a defensive player drops that's in a tier well above an olineman I don't really have that much of a problem taking that player. Basically it's picking a guy you think it's a all pro type guy over a guy you think might be just an above average starter. Of course trading down is another option if someone drops like that also but again it might not be insane to just pick that defensive player. I think Spielman is a guy that picks best player available and he and Zimmer clearly are on the same page quite a bit but I think Spielman knows they have to keep putting real resources into that Oline. Let's hope that if a defensive player drops its a DT.
After the Thielen deal we don't have the cap space to sign all our picks so I would expect some depth picks that will let us cut guys to open up space.

I haven't seen the numbers breakdown preseason yet but it's quite possible his deal actually adds some cap space for this season. I'm not that worried about cap space if there is one thing the Vikings actually are good at its navigating the cap.

That said the team we have next year will be the team we have in 2020 too. The only guy that I could see being cut is Griffin. He has an 800k dead money and 14M in cap space. The rest of the guys have big dead cap numbers.

Letting go of Reiff will be more palatable though than this year that's another guy that could see being gone. Of course they have to have another option for that to happen but that's a way they could save over 8 million. Meanwhile there is zero money allocated to Waynes for 2020...
One of the things to consider is what happens with Cousins at the end of this season. Is he the guy they want to keep around for a few more years or will it be a consideration that after his deal expires they will be looking at other options? Maybe a younger much cheaper guy. The QB position is a way they could either get more cap space next year signing Cousins to a longer deal lowering his cap hit or pushing back salary to the next season because they think they may be paying quite a bit less for that position one way or another. There are options including renegotiated deals for high paid vets...or trades. There is plenty chance for a decent amount of turnover on this roster...although I agree there probably won't be anything too drastic.
True. We have a lot of guys in 2020 that can cut or restructure but will carry 2M or more in dead cap.
This year to me looks like the last year for a core group of Joseph. Griffin, and Rhodes with this team. Rudolph, Waynes, and Alexander are FA's in 2020.
The more I think about Bush the more I think about how weak this LB class is. I don't see them going that direction. It will be interesting what they do. A guy nobody talks about but makes sense is safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson from Florida. He can play all over the defensive backfield. He had 71 stops, nine for loss, three sacks, a team-high four interceptions and two pass breakups last year. He is not very tall but just produces. I could see him over Bush on defense. The DL has some many options. Namely Cortez Broughton and P.J. Johnson. PJ Johnson ran a sub 5.second 40 at 335lbs. That is freaky fast for an NT that weighs 335lbs. He also recorded 3 sacks last year from NT. Again that is solid production.
One guy I see as a sleeper OL is Hjalte Froholdt from Arkansas. He is strong the limited game film I found on him he doesn't get beat badly. His short arms will hurt his draft position, but if we can grab him in 6th/7th round that would be a steal. On the draft simulator at https://thedraftnetwork.com he would be available.

Despite limited experience, his promise was not lost on colleges or recruiting services, as he was ranked among the top 20 defensive linemen in the country. Froholdt played in 10 games on defense for Arkansas in 2015 (three tackles) before moving to the other side of the line the following spring. He started all 13 games at left guard in 2016, and then all 12 games at that spot as a junior, not allowing a sack and incurring only two penalties. Froholdt started his senior season at center, starting the first three games there before switching back to left guard for the final nine contests.

Interesting stuff Bleed. I'd draft the Dane with 6th or 7th rounder just because of the name. Vikings guy a couple fun names every year. Might as well put him down as a guy we are gonna get one way or another. :)
