Season is basically over...so now what?

Post by Monster »

I mean the season was pretty much over after that Seattle lose but today was the nail in the coffin and also the coffin was thrown in the big hole and left there.

The NFL doesn't usually have a big time trade deadline but is there any realistic moves the Vikings could make?

Thinking about cutting Cousins after this season is starting to feel like it has more merit...we have a ways to go though before we see if that's something that the Vikings would even do. Is there a team that would trade for him? Is Shannahan still a Cousins guy?

Vikings did well to lose today if you like the idea of tanking.

It seems like with the likes of Cook and Jefferson, they have a future 1-2 punch on offense that may allow the offense to be good enough, even with just a middle-of-the-pack QB. They should focus on rebuilding a world class defense, which is supposedly Zimm's strength, no?

Let the tank commence and fire everyone this offseason. Try to trade Cousins and if nobody takes him cut him and deal with it. Nobody on the team is going to be in his corner at the end of this year and you can't have that at QB.

That's an interesting Point I hadn't thought about if Cousins loses his teammates trust also. The Vikings put their trust in Cousins and Cousins isn't exactly rewarding them this year. It's worth saying that they didn't exactly help him in terms of the oline though either and yet the Vikings still have talent at position players so Cousins can't complain too much. They came into this game wit the 4th best rushing attack in the league averaging over 5 yards a carry.

Back to Cousins. If they did cut him he would have 21 million base salary in addition to 20 million in signing bonus they would owe him. I wonder if there are any offsets on that base salary if he signs elsewhere. Let's say there was even a 50% offset. That could be big in terms of savings for the Vikings. I'd guess unless the market is tight with a lot of QB options and few openings Cousins would be able to get something in the neighborhood of a 1 year 10 million offer. That would save the Vikings 5 million. It might benefit them to cut him loose as soon as it make sense to get him to another spot...assuming nobody wants to trade for him. My guess is that Cousins may be open to a renegotiation if he was traded (instead of his whole salary for 2022 guaranteed) or maybe even he would do that to stay with the Vikings IDK. The Vikings have deferred money for 3 years now for cap hit so that should be remembered but that 2022 35 million salary is gonna be big even if someone trades for him. I think he would be better off agreeing to even 10 million of that 2022 salary straight guaranteed from whoever decides to have him on the roster in 2021. He has quite a few more games to audition at this point...I don't imagine the Vikings are gonna be rolling someone else out there for a while...although Cousins whole is guaranteed for injury so...I guess you never know. Can't wait to see Jake Browning and Nate Stanley alternating drives!!! Lol

Zimmer has to go.

Spielman is the main problem. The OL has been bottom tier for a decade. Unfortunately with the extensions of him and Zimmer it would be hard for the Wilfs to swallow those contracts.

Spielman also has been poor at drafting or finding QB's AND has always refused to provide adequate backups. Though Bridgewater and Cousins have been adequate we also have Ponder and Bradford as well.

Too many bust QB's to have a couple adequate ones.

I doesn't matter who your RB and WR's are when you have poor to garbage OLines and poor to adequate QB's.

Can we just draft a QB in the top 5 finally? A bad line and a QB who can't move with a slow release is an impossible formula. How long has this team been leaning on re-treads and impossible hopes for QBs from poorly drafted positions. The line has sucked for a long time, but our approach to the most important position in football has been sucky for even longer.

My main request is we somehow keep Andre Patterson around. DJ Wonnum made some plays again in the Falcons game.

Early in Game I was thinking what a good DT would do for this defense. Fortunately the Vikings should have that in Pierce. They need another one but a guy like him would make a big difference. At this point the DBs are the question except Harrison Smith who is only signed for 1 more year. Dantzler can really come up and tackle I like that aspect of him.

Barr and Hunter getting hurt combined with Pierce opting out is pretty much the worst case scenario for this defense given how much they were going to need to the front seven to dominate to protect the young corners. I guess the good new is Harris has played himself out of any big deal so we didn't make a mistake getting him signed long-term last offseason. If we pick in the 5-7 range rather than the top 4 I think DT would be a good spot to go. Bring back Yannick and hopefully Hunter isn't injured long term and you can turn the biggest weakness on the team into the strength it should have been this year and bounce back with a strong defensive year next year. If there is a franchise OT that would be hard to pass up at that spot though so it depends on how the top of the draft shakes out.

Gedeon is hurt too and Dye. Every team has injuries but that defensive group has been hit with them in addition to all the Fa leaving. I think they have been able to patch up the LB group reasonably well all things considered. Idk if they can afford to pay Yannick. Odenigbo is a RFA so they might be able to keep him for not too much money but he will get a raise. Regardless I agree this D can get back to being pretty good next year.
