Thanks for posting. I might dive back into that article more later. I just read the article I didn't read all the other stuff that was provided. I was not aware that tackles were not really strength of this draft. This make me think a trade down sound even more likely.

After reading this I want to trade up for Trey Lance. What a great kid!

Re: 2021 Vikings Draft Thread
My guess is that if someone the Vikings have pegged as a top 10 guy they'll take him at 14. If not, there's a solid chance they'll trade back to try to get an extra pick in the 2nd round (or 3rd round then trade up to the 2nd).
I'm pretty certain it irks Spielman not having a 2nd round pick and nothing to show for it. One thing I do like about Spielman is that he doesn't reach for players, but instead trades down/up to a slot where the player is of adequate/good value which is the best use of draft capital (why draft a player at 14 if you can get the same level player at 20 and pick up an extra 2nd?).
My dream scenario would be for Penei Sewell to slide and the Vikings to get into a position (without mortgaging the future) to nab him. Originally I was thinking it's a lock that the Bengals would draft him, especially given their rookie QB (Burrow) went down to injury last year and didn't have good blocking in front of him. With that said, the WRs in this draft are going to be tempting to them, and OTs are deep enough in this draft that they could go with a guy like Chase at #5 and still get a quality rookie LT with their next pick.
As far as the QBs... I have seen Lawrence a handful of time, and the guy's talent is obvious. He gives me the feeling that I got watching Luck at Stanford, which is high praise. He is, without a doubt, the real deal.
Fields I've seen a short bit of, but he didn't really do anything that popped for me. Can't wait for the draft, as always..and glad the teams at least will be drafting in person again.

I agree. I think he is sliding. He didn't have a stellar pro day and has not played since 2019 which has made teams cautious.

Thanks for posting. There are a lot of guys (especially QBs) I simply haven't delved into because I didn't think the Vikings had any chance of drafting them. Trey Lance has sort of the 2020 NBA draft vibe where some of the top options didn't have much to go on...except Lance isn't a guy that's been heralded or talked about for years.

Speilman has a terrible history with Olinemen. Trading back to get a lesser talent is a bad idea. This draft is set up for them to get one of the top 3 linemen. Don't get cute. If I had to guess tho I bet they take the DE out of Miami.

I think Spielman has a better track record than people realize. I'm certainly not suggesting it's good but O'Neill was a big hit and Cleveland sure looked at least promising last year. The problem was for years he didn't spend anything more than a 4th rounder on the group. This franchise hasn't earned the right to trust them in terms of oline but I'll trust them if they trade back. Rick has made some nice trade up deals in the past for pretty good players. It feels like this draft is a beauty in the eye of the beholder for some various position groups and that includes oline.

I saw someone where that Spielman basically nails every second-rounder.
Looking back we have done very well in second round the last 10 years. Chris Cook was our worst pick in that time.

Re: 2021 Vikings Draft Thread
The biggest issues with Spielman have been at the QB spot. Ponder was a terrible pick and disaster. Trading a 1st round pick for Bradford which could have ended up being Mahomes or Watson was a disaster.
Extending Cousins for a premium big deal remains to be seen but looks like it could likely end up in disaster as well.
Kalil who ended up being at best mediocre was a disaster. Then mostly ignoring the OLine to protect the QB's have been a continuous disaster.
To give him some credit, he has done fairly well overall with 2nd-4th rounders. But the big moves have been where he has failed.
