This was certainly a Zimmer pick. We should have gone with Jaylon Johnson who is 2 years younger and was a better prospect. (no injuries and 2 inches taller to boot) He went to the Bears. I felt Cameron Dantzler was better than Gladney coming out of the draft.
Antoine Winfield Jr injury history worried me for a 1sst rounder. He landed in the perfect spot.
It sounds like they are going to try and void the rest of his contract. He isn't proven guilty yet but the fact that the Vikings decided to move on is not a good sign. If what he is being charged for is true the worst thing is what happened to the victim.
At this point the Vikings need to be able to find other guys to fill Gladney's spot. In a recent media session Zimmer said Kris Boyd has all the talent in the world but needed to have a next play mentality. If Boyd or Hand become a solid starting CB and Dantzler does as well we can move on. It will also help if Xavier Woods becomes an answer at the other safety spot and doesn't get paid a ton of money. It will be interesting to see if Alexander stays around past this season.

Yeah I am not overly worried about the position group and it has good depth and mix of youth, but it sucks wasting a chip on Gladney.
Taking a quick look it looks like Winfield tied for 3rd in the class with 3 sacks last year. Not bad for a safety.

I agree with you Winfield's injury history may have kept him from being a 1st rounder but if it would have been me I think I would have taken him. That's a little easier to say now though. Ultimately I'm glad the guys is playing well and hope he can stay healthy. It's too bad it wasn't here though that would have been a great story. He gets to do his own thing though and it's off to a terrific start.
Definitely a bummer on having to move on from Gladney this quick, but clearly the right move given the circumstances.
Like crazy, I wanted Winfield Jr pretty bad. Honestly, I wanted both him and Trent Williams, and the sad part it, it could have easily happened. Winfield wasn't drafted until middle of the 2nd, and Trent Williams was traded for a 3rd. We could have traded down and still gotten both, or just taken Winfield in the 1st, and traded our 2nd for Williams, who has since remained a dominant left tackle for the 49ers. How good would our team look with those 2 instead of Ezra and Gladney? (No offense to Ezra, but we're comparing him to a future HOFer still at the top of his game, meanwhile Winfield Jr was about as safe of a pick as I could think of given his style of play and his pedigree)
We'll get to see the starters later today, I am not optimistic on the Vikes this season so far. Simply based on the moves made in the offseason. I think the offense will be fine, probably 5-10 range, but I think the defense could easily and likely be in the bottom 10.

Unless there are some significant injuries I don't think there is a way the defense will be that bad. Even if it was the same defense as last year adding 2 above average DT and Hunter is massive improvement over what was there last season. It's gonna be much harder to run on the Vikings this year and last year that wasn't the case. Could the secondary be a concern? Yeah that is possible but it's hard to be much worse than last year. Would I invest heavily in this defense as a fantasy football owner? No. Of course so don't do that for any defense because I stream them but anywho. :)
Well...the Jake Browning era was short. Mond wasn't much better. To be fair Cousins didn't exactly look good either but I'm not exactly too worried about him.
Other than that not too much to really talk about from this ugly game. Punting was a positive and I thought it was interesting that Ameer was out there fielding punts. He was very good returning kicks at Nebraska.

Yeah, but we still were without Thielen and JJ.
But you're right that the backups and the backup OLine looks pretty bad (in the passing game). Both Mond and Browning are not starter material, and likely will never be. I was against the Mond pick, it was a mistake IMO. But you never know if you give a guy a few years to develop, maybe he can get significantly better.

I'm not really worried about Mond long term as he is a rookie and missed some key practice time etc. Browning looking bad is pretty disappointing after being in basically the same system all this time and getting all this extra work in. Having said that...he has only thrown passes in one preseason and that was 2 years ago. Still if they cut him tomorrow I wouldn't blame them one bit and I was a Browning fan. At least Mond can use his athletic ability. I would not be shocked if the Vikings are considering bringing in another QB if they think Mond wouldn't be ready if Cousins got hurt. The positives are that at this point nobody is going to be poaching Browning and he can be signed to the PS easily which I think they will keep him there as a backup plan just in case.

I agree with your take. Browning looking bad is a major concern as Mond is looking, well like a 3rd round rookie himself. I think we are in big trouble if we lose Cousins for any amount of time and either of these two has to play.
