Re: OT thread America
Video cameras are in virtually every business today, and almost every school public or private. Normally they are for security purposes but can also be used to monitor productivity. I've personally sold them to thousands of businesses, schools, hospitals, arenas, etc. I can tell you not everyone wants to be on camera all day long. Some people quit jobs over it. But it's just a fact of life nowadays. You would be surprised how often you are on camera when you're not aware of it. But to answer Bleed's question, I'd be surprised if they don't make their way into all classrooms in the future. And it's one thing you will have to accept if you want to become a teacher.

COVID certainly brought some attention from parents to classrooms by being able to witness some of what is going on and it raised concerns about the amount of focus spent on education vs indoctrination. It was certainly a concern in my district. The teachers union is a very powerful union and is a huge spender on lobbyists.
Education is ripe for a complete overhaul, but think it will be very hard to change due to resistance from the system to want to change.
Indoctrination is a fair word to use. To some extent that happens in any school public or private.
I'm with you on overhauling the school system. I know teachers unions will hold back the process but I think in general the problem is getting everyone to agree on what to do is going to be extremely challenging. People want some things to be basically indoctrinated and other people are going to say don't indoctrinate my child with that garbage or that system etc.
I think there are a lot of teachers that would welcome changes. One of the problems I can see is that it's difficult to make sweeping changes and schools are NOT all the same. What may work great at one school may fall flat at another. I get frustrated with our educational system in this country but I also recognize the massive challenge it is to make worthwhile changes.

It will be interesting. I think things will change at post graduate level first. I see education being a mix of master class type recording with in person facilitator that promotes engagement and interaction. The recorded content can be a huge equalizer and provide better overall education that is consistent.
My best teacher was a Middleastern man that taught Asian History. He basically just pushed the idea to question everything. As a computer science student it seems odd that this was the class that I found the most value and it was not on material but on idea of how to view the world.
My kids schools had teachers spending to much time on Capital, Wright and Floyd events which were more important to administration then students. When one of the students who was on the football team was murdered nothing was said. One of my daughters teachers brokendown about the situation and how no support was offered for students and staff.

Uptown Art Fair cancelled. This certainly shows the bad state of things in Minneapolis.
Up at the lake I ran into a friend who was Minneapolis resident in a downtown loft and then southwest Minneapolis home. He lived about a mile from Cup Foods and he said they sold his house last August. He said it felt like he lived in a war zone with helicopters and sirens going on at all hours.

IMHO our education system is archaic and basically more of glorified childcare than actually an educational system. Students in general are not prepared to live in the world when they level or get a job. They have some knowledge which is worthwhile but if you spend 12-13 years of your life in school and then are barely qualified to get anything more than an entry level job? What the fuck were you doing that whole time? Also there are too many students graduating that don't have a worthwhile reading level. One kid I went to HS with and I was later a staff there...my boss who was also the history teacher said he guessed at best that kid had a 3rd grade reading level...and he went to private schools all his life. He wasn't maybe the smartest kid but you certainly wouldn't have guessed by being around him he could barely read.
You bring up a great point about post HS education is changing and to some extent it could become an equalizer. There are currently a ton of free ways to learn a vast amount of information. YouTube, mass online classes etc. information has never been more available. Like you said hopefully more people start thinking outside the box.
Not having support for students and staff is a big problem. Again from my view this is based on an old system that I think leaves many things behind. Obviously resources are limited and yet where can they be reallocated in a way that's more effective?

How is everyone feeling about the Afghan withdrawal? It seems like such a double-edged sword.

Cubans pushing for freedom wave the American flag. American liberals who have the freedom call it a symbol of hate. Things are getting so upside down in this world.
