I feel like a broken record saything this but there going to end up with a lower payroll this year then last year. How is this okay??? There payroll last year was 125 million right now before arbitration were sitting at 85 million. Unless they sign a Dondalson type player there going to come in under.
I can't find 2019 revenue numbers, but based on ticket sales alone they would have drawn in 74M in 2019 vs 2018 63M. So if you lets say revenue moved from 269M in 2018 to 288M in 2019. 43% of revenue was spent on payroll last year. I really doubt the Pohlands are telling them that number needs to go down. I think they are playing wait and see.
They didn't sign Cruz until 1/2/19 and then Gonzalez until 2/25/19 last year. They seem to love these late in FA signings. It will be interesting who they sign. I thought the Lance Lynn and Logan Morrison signings were good at the time, but both backfired and Lance bitched about his contract at every turn.
If we don't get Bumgarner or Donaldson where does it make sense to spend money on this roster? Do you think salaries held them back from making moves during the season last year? Would it make sense to go into the year with 100M payroll and then make a trade that brings on another 20-30M in June/July?
I used to think the Pohlad's were cheap, but the numbers don't support it. Maybe that will change this year., but based on them spending 52% of revenue on the payroll in 2011 I doubt it.
