I also don't see how we're not nearing that time with Karl Anthony Towns. It's been 8 years... and his HUGE raise is about to kick in. I think it's fair to assume we're not going to see Towns improve at this point... at least not in Minnesota.
That's the rub. Much like with Andrew Wiggins, it's obvious change is necessary. We just have to be ready for when the player we ditch (even if 100% justifiable) performs well in his new home.
Andrew Wiggins was NOT going to improve in Minnesota. He had to leave and join a world-class organization for his resurgence. At this point, I have to say that Karl Towns is NOT going to improve in Minnesota.
And that guy simply isn't worth what he's about to be paid... nor does he even fit in on the team with Gobert lumbering in the middle.

Here's the problem:
everyone else knows that too and the solution to replacing at least the on court production doesn't come from any late firsts you'll get in return for him. That requires losing and this team can't even reap the benefits of that anymore.
I'm not on board with trading KAT, but it's not because we wouldn't get a terrific return. KAT is a great offensive player and rebounder in his prime. He's unique offensively in that he's tremendously efficient and elite in multiple categories, which is rare for any player, especially a big. I wouldn't trade him because he's a great player who wants to be here and that's a hard thing to find. His game also meshes well with Ant and McDaniels. This "KAT isn't a winner" narrative is misplaced. The Wolves finished 10 games over .500 last season and took the team with the best record in the West to 6 games in the playoffs -- all with KAT as the team's best player. Note that as good as Edwards and McDaniels have been this season, they weren't as good last season. KAT had no all-star players on the roster with him last season. But he had enough talent in Ant, McDaniels, Vando, Beverley and DLO to have a lot of success.
The only other time KAT has ever had another all-star with him on the roster was when Butler was here and -- guess what -- the Wolves made the playoffs. Butler missed 20 games that season, most of them near the end of the season. Before he went down, the Wolves were on a trajectory to finish 4th or 5th. KAT didn't do well in the playoffs that season, but he was 22 years old playing in his first post-season. He performed really well in last season's series against Memphis.
KAT's a great player, albeit an annoying one sometimes. I get that he's not a #1 on a championship contender, but with Ant here we don't need him to be a #1. TC messed things up with his idiotic trade for Gobert. And KAT had a serious injury this season. I think TC would compound his screw-up if he traded KAT this summer without first moving Rudy and trying to get this team back to what it was when it finished 10 games above .500 with KAT as its centerpiece. I'd love to see KAT play a full season healthy with the much improved Ant and McDaniels along with Kyle Anderson. Next season Ant would be the centerpiece or #1 unlike last season and KAT would be the #2. That's a potentially winning formula.
Yes, it was time to move on from Wiggins a few years ago. But KAT's a different story.
TC should move Rudy this summer for a rotation player, one future first and some salary flexibility. If things don't go well next season, the Wolves can trade KAT next summer and still get a substantial return for him.
