I would welcome an intervention, which I need for a lot of things. But one thing I don't need an intervention for is my openness to trading the 2nd or 3rd pick, Ricky and Culver for Turner and Indiana's 2022 first-round pick (lottery protected). Effectively, we'd be trading Jalen Green or Jalen Suggs for Turner and Indiana's 2022 pick. Green and Suggs are very talented, but they haven't played a game in the NBA and history is repeat with 2nd and 3rd picks who didn't amount to much. Looking back on prior 2nd or 3rd picks, it's probable that Green and Suggs won't end up as good as Turner. And neither one fits a position of need for the Wolves. Here's what we'd be getting in return:
1. Myles Turner - We'd be getting one of the League's best defensive bigs who is also an elite rim protector to shore up one of the League's worst defenses. He'd fill a position of need and provide defense where we need it the most - inside, next to KAT. And he's still young at age 25, so he fits perfectly with the players around whom this team is currently built.
2. Indiana's 20220 pick -- We'd be getting a pick likely in the 15-20 range in 2022, which looks like it will be a really deep draft. Otherwise, we'd have no draft pick that year because of the Golden State trade.
3. Salary savings from trading Culver and the pick along with Ricky -- Trading Culver and our pick would save a net of around $12.2M to use in free agency.
I'm still sure I'd do the deal because of my concern about Turner's toe. But I'm not out on a limb if you take a realistic view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of a couple guys only one year removed from high school.
I'd still welcome an intervention, though. :)
That's a solid breakdown of your position Lip.
Lip here is another way to look at it. Whoever the Wolves pick may not be all-stars but there is a legit chance Turner plays like 100 more games and his career is over. Remember how upset people got when Pek got that 5 year deal? Turner probably isn't quite at that spot and is still young but...the injury risk of him is pretty significant. If we are going to value 2022 first round picks I say use the theoretical pick to trade down and get another similar pick for 2022 while doing so. :) Turner's injuries might mean the Pacers decide now is the time to cash in on him. If offers are as strong as some reports indicate I think they should move him.
The package (especially the draft pick) you are talking about is more of what people a few weeks or months ago were wanting to do for John Collins. Honestly IF...(I'm still not completely convinced Turner is one of the best defensive players in the league) Turner was actually healthy I think he actually fits the Wolves better than Collins and would likely cost less money even when we had to resign him in a couple years. So I get why you are going after Turner. Meanwhile Collins had a nice game tonight but his stats in the playoffs have been a little disappointing. At this point I wouldn't trade for Collins if he wants a Max deal...I mean I guess if they just give him away or something but at this point that contract seems like an overpay even if he is a 2-way player which I still have some skepticism about.
Every offseason there are a couple opportunities that we didn't see coming so I do think there is a chance the Wolves can make a deal to get a good player to pair Towns with to at least help the team take the next step. Personally because of the value of players the Wolves might want to pursue...I still think the Wolves are going to have to supplement via cheap FA player/s and develop their own guy. IF the Wolves end up getting their 2021 pick that means they have another more immediate path towards adding another talent to the roster and possibly one that plays next to towns. It's early there may be a big that moves up to one of those picks that we end up being pretty excited about having the opportunity to select.
