Yes you have it and here is the thing the wolves before all the injuries and thads mom passing away were looking like They had a shot at doing something. We planned for pek and Martin being hurt but Rubio missing all that time wasn't in the plan and then Thad wasn't the same player for weeks after he was away. Maybe the wolves wouldn't have made the playoffs but I think If Rubio would have been healthy Thad would have been a lot more useful on both sides of the ball even if his jumper was broke as it was.
Here is the deal. Will Flip get enough things right to turn this franchise around? What if Wiggins turns out to be a terrific player Bazz becomes a Spreewell type impact player and he gets it right on a couple other players that turn into legit above average starters or key rotation players? Some of these other little screw ups will be part of the business nobody even the Spurs don't get it right every time. I'm not trying to defend Flip just being a little realistic and somewhat optimistic about some of the moves he has made that look pretty good right now. We will see.
Nobody bats 1.000. That being said we weren't going to compete in the west if everything went right. Why not keep the first round draft pick and build for the future instead of getting a highly paid guy in Young who isn't quite starting material? We have great young potential, but trading two firsts for PFs, whom may not work out doesn't seem smart to me.
Hindsight is great isn't it? Lol the board was fairly split of Thad at least at first. My point it that either of those picks may not matter and who knows maybe Payne works out let's wait and see on that I'm not a big fan but I like his size and his ability to shoot. he makes sense in a lot of ways.
If Thad were to opt-out and sign a lower dollar longer-term deal then he would be shortsighted. He stands to gain a lot more money by opting in and re-signing a long-term deal when the TV money trickles in. Yes, he may risk security through injury or poor play, but financially it wouldn't be wise because middling players could stand to gain a lot of money if there isn't any alteration to the max contract. And he will only be 27/28 years old.
I just don't see a big downside to trading Thad at this point. The first rounder was already a sunk cost, he wasn't getting it done, his trade value was almost nil, so we got something we thought could help now. We don't care about winning today anyway. We're trying to teach young guys how to play AND win in the NBA, and Flip feels like the benefits of KG's presence outweigh those of Thad's. And statistically KG has better stats than Thad in almost all the key areas we need help.

Help me out with something, cam (and others). Thad is due almost $10 million next year at his option...if he opts in, he collects the 10 mill and can become an UFA the next year, still at a young age. Why would he unilaterally agree to take $4 million less than he is owed next year? I'm missing something here because many analysts are saying he is going to opt out. I'm confused!
Because he obviously wants to work almost twice as long and make the same amount of money.
I couldn't be happier that this happened. I feel for Thad Young and I wish him well in Brooklyn (and I'll get to see him frequently here). But KG coming home is something I never thought I'd see again. Wanted a vet presence? You got him. Wanted a potential new owner one day (like I do)? You got him. Want someone that could even take a bit of the pressure off of Flip on the court allowing Flip to relax a bit and focus more on the front office side of things? You got him.
If you wanna be upset at the process, sure, be mad at the process because while Philly is stockpiling every pick imaginable, we disregard what 1st and 2nd rounders mean. The result of this is something I can't complain about though. We're a young team and unlike every other team, we've lost for so long that we'll do anything to avoid a lengthy process. If KG doesn't perform well, it isn't for lack of IQ or lack of talent. Hopefully the wisdom he can provide can wear off on the rest of the team. By all accounts he was a huge reason for the emergence of Mason Plumlee in Brooklyn.
On the surface, we gave up a lot for KG on his last legs, but in this case, I really don't care. I'm glad he's back and I'm at a point where if KG can't help us grow as a team, who the hell will?

Truly curious as to what some of you think the Wolves could have gotten back for Thad.....Terrence Ross? Nick Stauskus? So many bright minds on this board that follow the league no doubt, but when you look at what happened today seriously tell me what you thought the pot of gold was for Thad...because the answer was NOT a 1st round pick.

Most of the frustration is we spent a first round pick on him and it ends up with no long term benefit for us.
Getting rid of Thad's 10 million dollar contract for next year is nice. He isn't going to opt out because he won't find a better deal.

Portland gave up a 1st for Afflalo. Boston gave up a 1st for Isaiah Thomas. How is Young so much different than these two?
