It would also be cool if I had a full head of hair again. Not happening.

Anyone who listened to the press conference can tell Thad asked for a trade. It's obvious that opting out is not a financially sound move for Thad. But Milt said "Thad's people indicated they were considering opting out". Hello people! That's straight up talk for saying "I want to be traded!".
Next. I cannot believe how Cam, Cool and Alex (others?) refuse to acknowledge, even if they do not agree, with why Flip wanted KG. It's not nostalgia. It's not a hard-on. And it's not the on-court production. Flip says it plain as day in the press conference. It was an opportunity to bring a championship mentality to a currently young and directionless team.
The nostalgia and goosebumps are perks. It is the focus, intensity and championship mentality that Flip hopes to bring to this young team. It is an absolute unique opportunity that was only available because of KG's history with the organization.
So, you can continue to critique it. You can continue to disagree with it. But at least acknowledge what the damn trade was all about!
Who cares if Thad asked for a trade? What does that have to do with anything? He's not going to sit out games, and the worst he could of done was opt out, which many here would be happy that he did.
Championship mentality is sooooo overrated. Here are some examples of guys who were brought for their championship mentality,JJ Barea,Derek Fisher with the Thunder,Perkins with the Thunder.
Hell can anyone name anyone that's was considered over the hill, and was brought for their "championship mentality" having ever worked out? I doubt it's ever happened
How about 40 year old MJ for the Wizards?

1. I understand the idea behind acquiring Thad even though I felt then and still do that they should have gone all in on the future and not made a somewhat desperate attempt to be relevant this year.
2. Given Thad was a stopgap and injuries destroyed any chance at relevance combined with the fact that Thad was not a long term answer to this teams needs at the 4 getting rid of him was the correct thing to do IMO.
3. Looking at the relatively low price of acquiring players on Thursday I have to question Thad's value in that market given his shortcomings and the $10M due next year.
4. If they most return on Thad was going to be a 2nd round pick or some other useless vet I don't have much issue with taking KG in return. If some of his competitive fire rubs off on the youngsters I think the value of his presence will far outweigh any potential late round pick or run of the mill vet.
5. Again, relative to the prices obtained Thursday I believe it is very fair to question giving up the future 1st for Payne.
In summary, 1-4 doesn't bother me nearly as much as some simply because there was no way to know that the season would get torpedoed in such spectacular fashion. It wasn't the way I would have gone, but I understand the reasoning. Was KG enough in return for ensuring Thad's salary would be gone next year? Without knowing what was offered other than KG and knowing the low prices obtained in general on Thursday the question cannot reasonably be answered. Waiting and signing KG for nothing this off season was only an option if they had another way of dumping Thad without taking back long term salary.
Regarding number 5, we can only hope Flip was right and Payne pays off long term.
I'm going to go with the optimistic perspective that the future is as bright or brighter today as it was Thursday morning until proven otherwise!

Re: From ESPN Insider
I'm just going to throw it out there that I think KG just retires if he ends the year as a Net. I don't think the plan was to come back to MN until Flip gave them a call to see if they'd take Thad off our hands for him. I also don't think Flip gets KG if Thad opts in and if Thad opts out and you sign KG in his place it is literally no different than making the trade in the first place. You can argue that we could have just signed him in the offseason, but who are you going to cut to open up that roster spot? The draft pick already puts us one over so that means you have to cut two just to have the opportunity to sign KG. It's easy to say that we could have got more for Thad or we could have just signed KG in the offseason, but that is making assumptions that you just don't know.

I have to disagree with your assertion that the worst thing Thad could have done was opt out. The worst thing he could have done, and what the Wolves brass feared, was to opt IN, and use up $10 million of cap space for inefficient offense and sub-par rebounding and defense. That's the bullet the Nets allowed Flip to dodge.

Re: From ESPN Insider
I HATE to post this opinion because it has so many holes and it basically takes a dump on analytics, but this idea that bringing in a "winner" and someone who has a "locker room presence" has SOME validity because people who have actually suited up in the league RAVE about Kendrick Perkins as a teammate. Different players with different skill sets (and different ages) I know, but it is something to think about when we look simply at the nostalgia argument for the trade.

Yeah and a lot of us thought Love could bring back Wiggins. So what.
I think what Cam is saying here grey, is that I wasn't a very good prognosticator about what Love would bring back in a trade, so that my value meter might need recalibration. He's correct about my original Love call, but I argue that LeBron inserting himself into the Love/Wiggins discussion changed the entire equation.
True, but my point is that there were many that thought you were wrong about Love/Wiggins and many that think you are right in this case. People are wrong sometimes. It happens.

Lets also add what I think was one of the biggest things Flip talked about. His presence outside of games specifically practices.
