(actually Mikkeman has added greatly on the analytics angle, as have others. I think it's increasingly creeping into the dialogue everywhere. Even J-Pete and Benz are doing it. But I enjoy a variety of takes. It would be no fun if everyone agreed with each other).
Stats are great. My issue with analytics has nothing to do with the usefulness of stats but more on how easily they are being misused. If people don't have a strong statistical background and try to use analytics it can be a disaster. I think that is a huge danger not just on message boards but also on teams. The high level analytics were developed by some really smart people who studied statistical modelling at some top educational institutions. Logic compels me to believe that this type of information doesn't always translate easily to the average Joe on the street or even the GM with mostly a basketball background. For instance I have read people throwing out raw stats in favor of analytics which defeats the simplest premise of any deep analytical statistical analysis; that it should explain and compliment raw stats and not make them obsolete.
That first line is key. I AM someone with a stats background. And I DO know how to apply statistical theory to athletics. I spent a good part of my life making my livelihood using statistical analysis. Yet, I refer to statistics very little on this board. With all the stats out there today, ANYONE can quickly reference a stat or table that can back up the particular argument they are making. It's not that hard. The problem as it applies to athletics is it cannot be the only lens you use to make evaluations and judgments. Some guys like stats because it makes them appear smart, and I'm not saying anyone is dumb or those who reference stats are. But I DO know that the smart analyst uses statistics as only one item in a package of tools to make fair, meaningful evaluations. Advanced metrics are NOT the be all, end all in athletic evaluation. I can promise you that. If they were there would be no reason to look forward to Adrien Paynes debut tonight. As it is I am really looking forward to seeing how he looks with us.

I think Charles was a Lil bit on the defensive after reading those tweets.. So I take what he said with a grain of salt. He's also on TNT for his entertainment value.. And I actually enjoy him. His honesty is a breathe of fresh air.
