I agree that if someone just parachuted into the U.S. without any prior knowledge of the history or culture, they'd be aghast at a number of things - gun violence being one of them. I guess we're mostly on the same page as you are very well aware of how history and culture influences the present state and one can't just point their finger at another country's problems without first understanding the full context.

I'm personally a moderate on guns and my guess is most Americans are moderate as well. I believe in the 2nd Amendment, but also sensible reforms over and beyond the ones that already exist. I personally believe owning a gun is more dangerous than not owning a gun, but I wouldn't impose that belief on others.

1) Because owning a gun means you are more likely to accidentally shoot yourself or someone else vs. not owning a gun; 2) It also makes it easier to badly hurt or kill someone in a crime of passion (versus, say, using your fists); 3) Someone in your household or someone that knows you own the gun may use it against you or others; 4) Someone that can't legally buy a gun may want to steal yours.

In other words, simply not having any firearms in the house largely eliminates all of these potentialities.And I believe the scenarios above (combined odds) are more likely to happen than you actually ever being put in a position to have to use the gun to defend your life or your property. This logic applies to ~80% of the U.S. population in my opinion.

Having said that, there are very real circumstances (none of which I find myself in) where I can see the logic of owning a gun.

I think the GOV's anti-gun propaganda has been very effective (like Eric Holders speech above). Sure they would like to have had guns banned 20 years ago, but these things take time. Although with all the false flag ops raising gun sales to all time highs under Obama ( while just a few under Trump) maybe enough people are really educated on what is really going on.
