Wolves fire rosas!!!

Leaving aside the moral aspect (not to mention yet another misspelling in a published report),

DAMN IT!

I blame Trump. And that's only partly tongue-in-cheek. I don't care about this from a political angle. You love the guy, you hate the guy... I don't care.

But I was bothered by all the silly typos and misspellings from the very beginning. It's just such a dumb mistake and entirely below the position. He's arguably the most important man in the world. His administration had many, many people available to avoid those mistakes. Yet here we are, years later. If the most important job/organization in the world doesn't care about spelling, why should other people. It's a slippery slope.

But for some of us, spelling matters. Case in point...

I have my first job interview in many years next week. It's for a position where details matter. (In an ironic twist, it's not entirely unlike the job somebody failed at with the Wovles.) Yet the person who contacted me (presumably my boss) misspelled my name. I never even read the end of the email at first because I was so distracted by the silly, unnecessary mistake. I'm now going into the interview questioning if I even want the gig.

I also equate it to a basketball poster making a really good argument... but using an easily verifiable inaccurate stat to start the argument. I'm never getting to the meat of the story if you can't do the simplest things correctly.



I guess I'm more entertained than annoyed by repeated typos and misstatements out there, Abe. I'm not sure I blame the ex-prez, but I do note the hilarious usage error in his recent lawsuit against the NYT and his niece.

Pssst...Donald. Didn't you mean to say overstated? Next time make sure Rudy is sober before he files a lawsuit.

Imagine working decades to finally reach the pinnacle of your profession, only to throw it and your marriage away because you couldn't keep your dick in your pants.

I had this thought earlier this morning. President of Basketball Operations in the NBA is a dream job and one I'm sure many of us here have fantasized about many times -- I know I have. And to see someone throw it all away because of an inappropriate workplace relationship as well as normal people skills... It's just sad, really.

Wait, are we sure they weren't actually rehearsing a scene that involved a kiss for an upcoming play? Or a sitcom? Either way, it's a farce. And there's only one good title for this show, "The Timberwolves."

I am with you guys, FNG and Abe, on the importance of spelling. It should be a basic thing, especially when there's grammar-checking software out there easily available. For casual stuff, like this bored, sure, go ahead and misspell words (whoa, actually, it literally just autocorrected me, so . . . never mind--two words, not one, which it also just autocorrected!). I think it is important to get spelling and grammar right (write?) if you're writing for the public, or you're the head of some company/department sending messages to employees or customers (and probably have a communications person working for or with you). In situations like that, spelling mistakes and other grammar errors, when frequent, are evidence of carelessness or possibly laziness. They undermine faith in you, when your position requires authority and trust.

But I have to admit, I could never remember whether his first name or his last had the double "S."

That's funny, Drew, because I still don't know how to spell his first name! I'm pretty sure his last name is R-O-S-A-S, although after the DLO trade, some wanted to give him an extra S in his second name too!

Leaving aside the moral aspect (not to mention yet another misspelling in a published report), how stupid was it for him to have his affair out in public? Was he thinking that maybe those in attendance might think it was some other balding, Columbian guy? Just dumb to say the least, and not the guy we want making decisions for us. I don't often support Glen Taylor in his decision-making, but I think he may have gotten this one right for a change...especially combined with the reports of a toxic workplace.

The moral aspect of this is a little more complex. While I don't in any way condone marital infidelity, what percentage of NBA stars do you think cheat on their wives or girlfriends? I guess the rules are different for executives as opposed to players. I also know nothing about Rosas's marriage, or whether they are even together. I did think it was peculiar that in the weeks after he was hired there were several photos of him with his (admittedly adorable) children, but none that I saw of him with his wife. I suspect there's been trouble in paradise for some time. But even then, complete your divorce before you are comfortable making out with another woman in public. Like I said...dumb.

I remember seeing pictures of him and his wife. They were at the state fair together with his kids.

As for the moral or maybe even just decency level aspect...people can do what they want or make mistakes. There are real consequences though for those actions. It's more complicated when it's within the workplace also. I'm not a part of a big company but don't most of them ask you to disclose a relationship if you have one? If I was Glen I think I would want to know if my top basketball executive had this type of relationship with a coworker. If Rosas isn't disclosing that to you what else isn't letting you know about?

As for typos and grammar...I'm not the greatest at that stuff but I work at trying to convey my thought the best I can. My wife is and many of my friends work in communications or teach rhetoric etc. I'm basically a goober in this regard compared to them. When I post here or write and email I tend to read everything over at least once to hopefully correct things and make it make sense. I still make mistakes. At work when I send emails I tend to make quite an effort to look it over well. I had a boss that when she hired an office manager she would get someone who was good at writing and proofreading because she struggled in that area. She was very good at a lot of aspects of her job but she found a way to counteract that weakness. She also hired good people for that job. It was not full time position so that's why people didn't stay for more than a few years.

When it comes to social media I don't post a whole lot although I have done a bit more via Facebook this year due to getting to know some people. I try and look over things there too.

I think it's fair to give people a break for making the occasional mistake especially if it's due to autocorrect. I think we have all experienced times where we type a word correctly and it gets changed to something else and then we correct it and then it gets changed again etc. What I do find bothersome is people that don't seem to care and make careless mistakes all the time. Also yes if you are a significant public figure I think you should be held to a higher standard. Still I'm going to give you a break if there is a mistake at some point. Everyone screws up sometimes. At the college I went to and worked at they printed up schedules for the women's volleyball team. One year they spelled it "Womenns" or something like that. It was a bad error all around but the athletic director who I had known for a long time was really embarrassed about it. He isn't a perfect guy but generally is well put together. It makes me feel a little better when someone that's legitimately good at their job and in general does well at the things they do make a mistake. They are human after all if I do something wrong once it isn't going to mean I suck. It can feel that way sometimes though.

Edit: Also I get that people have OCD or very particular and some things just jump out at them and they can't help but notice it and be very frustrated. I think everyone has something that if they see done incorrectly it drives them a little nuts.

Also I'm more interested in whether what someone says or writes communicates what they actually wanted to say. Language also changes. Words don't always mean the same thing to everyone but they do matter.

A former communication teacher/colleague and current friend always had a little piece of paper in his wallet that said "soapbox" which at times he would stop what he was saying...pull out his wallet pull out the piece of paper put it on the ground step on it and then say some of what was on his mind. I'm sure not everyone found it amusing but he said he first started doing that as a way for him to collect his thoughts and not just launch into something that maybe wasn't all that helpful. It's interesting to think of him as a guy that may have been a bit of a hot head at some point because I consider him an excellent communicator but he also played in the NCAA tourney many years ago so he was also a highly competitive athlete.

Most large organizations pay somebody (or multiple people) between $50k - $250k in part to avoid misspellings and such on public-facing documents.

No organization as large as the Wolves -- where public relations is a key component -- should be sending anything out that's this important unless it's proofed by multiple people.

It's a PR hit on multiple levels. People are mocking the Wolves once again. And deservedly so.
