He's due $6M+ next season... so any expiring contract that doesn't cause havoc to the tax this season.

Obviously, that isn't as easy for Rosas who gave up Saric to trade up for him. He'd have to take the PR hit. I just don't know how much value Culver has around the league to get anything of substance back. If he was only making $2.5M next season, sure, that's a pretty decent flyer in hopes a new spot unleashes him a bit.

But I don't see his future in Minnesota. And for that, I don't see why paying his salary is a good thing for the Wolves.

That's a great question, Cam. I'd like to believe we could get a future 2nd round pick that's 31-40 protected plus an expiring contract. If so, then I'd be tempted to take it. I'm not sure we could even get that. In any event, I'd prefer to see Finch give Culver a bunch of playing time down the stretch to see if he can increase his value before for possible off-season deals. I don't see how Culver's value could go down much from where it's at, which means it can only go up. The Wolves are obviously at a point where their focus needs to be entirely on next season and thereafter. Part of that focus has to be evaluating and developing our younger players, as well as giving our current competent head coach the chance to make the KAT/DLO duo work. But I think the Wolves forward-looking focus should also include an effort to enhance the trade value of Culver, which means significantly more than the 8 minutes he had last night. I'm not sure how to best accomplish that. It will be especially difficult with DLO and Beasley returning. I guess I'd start by taking Layman out of the rotation, even though I like his hustle and some of the things he does on the court.

That would be pretty disappointing to pull the trigger on considering how high Culver was taken, though. It's definitely bad optics for Gersson Rosas considering he even traded up in that draft and ended up with him. But we can't focus on optics as we just need to cut our losses at this point.

I tend to wonder if Minnesota can swing a deal for another highly-touted prospect who just hasn't been able to figure it out in their current situation. That's the kind of swap that franchises in all sports do from time to time without much brushback from their fans because of the hope that the incoming prospect will finally figure it out. Who comes to mind initially is Marvin Bagley III in Sacramento and Kevin Knox in New York -- both talented guys that would provide something different for the Wolves than what Culver did. I'm sure there are others worthy of consideration that haven't come to mind yet, but those two are probably attainable.

Looks like Bagley is out another month. And speaking of optics... that one might be a tough sell for Kings fans. As mediocre as Bagley has been, at least he has some decent counting stats (13/7/50%).

Culver is a volume and advanced stats trainwreck. I don't see it happening. The one rub is if Bagley has gone scorched earth and they just want to dump what will be an $11M contract next season.

Kevin Knox is a guy who can compete with Culver for ineptitude. In fact, it's probably fairly easy to claim he's been worse. Is he entirely a spot up three point shooter now? Last year 1/2 his attempts were three pointers... this year it's up to 62%. I think Culver offers some value in the right situation. I don't know if i can say the same about Knox.

How do you feel about Tobias Harris? Is he anywhere close to being a good contract for the Sixers? Is he a vital cog to their team? Has he been an upgrade over what they had prior to him? Why did they decide to pay him that much money with two other max contract players on the roster?

Also, it doesn't have to be Collins, but Minnesota shouldn't be afraid to spend money to get better. That's the point I'm trying to make.

That's a fair point, Cam. The distinction I'd make is that the Sixers were already a contender with their core Embiid/Simmons duo before they acquired Harris. In that case, it made sense to spend the money on a third guy at a max level to complement their two stars and help solidify their status as a contender and possibly push them up another notch. I'd feel differently about spending max money on Collins if I knew we already had a contending team with KAT and DLO or someone else. I know you have more confidence in the KAT/DLO duo than I have, but the point for me is that we haven't seen it yet and that's not solid enough for me to take on a third max contract.
