Most Exciting Draft Prospects

Post by Lipoli390 »

We typically focus on identifying who we think would be the best picks in the draft for the Wolves - based on some combination of talent and fit. But there's another category I'd call the most exciting picks, which aren't always the best. By exciting, I mean the players most likely to repeatedly do things on the court that fans find thrilling and that cause them to jump out of their seats.

So here are my top 5 most exciting players in order:

1. Obi Toppin -- He's the closest thing to Zion in this year's draft. He's explosive w/an offensive flare.

2. Anthony Edwards - An explosive guard. Elite speed in a 225 lbs frame.

3. LaMelo Ball - The rare player who can get fans out of their seats with his passing

4. Precious Achiuwa - Plays with incredible energy and reckless abandon. Will be crowd favorite

5. Deni Avdija - Not sure about this, but I can see him wowing fans as a 6'9 SF handling the ball like a guard and making some impressive passes in the open court.

One of the least exciting prospects is Vassell. Yet, I have him among my top 10 best prospects. He's a great example of the difference between best and exciting. I think Vassell is going to be an all-star caliber NBA player. He does a lot of things really well, but not with the flare of a LeMelo Ball or Obi Toppin.

In contrast, I don't have Achiuwa in my top t0 best even though I have him at #4 on my most exciting list.

You know who Obi Toppin reminds me of? Amari Staudemire

I like this thread Lip. In this draft which I haven't really gotten excited about in general for a myriad of reasons it feels like competence is kinda exciting. Lol That's why Vassell and Haliburton are guys that almost make me as interested as some of the exciting types. So the draft is slated for October? Maybe I'll get more excited then. Lol

That's a good comparison, Hockey! The only difference is that Obi is a better perimeter shooter than Amari. He also seems faster in the open court than Amari.

Glad you mentioned Haliburton. I agree that he's another guy like Vassell who isn't particularly exciting but who will likely be a very good NBA player. They both do a lot of things well on both sides of the ball. They probably won't do many things on the court that cause fans to jump out of their seats. But they will both help your team win.

Agreed. There will be fans that get out of their seats for good all around players. I could see Halliburton being sort of a Rubio type without the flash and point guard maestro ability but actually able to make shots. Part of what makes Rubio a good player is all the other stuff he is able to do that Halliburton profiles to be able to do as well. I get the sense that Halliburton is more overall instinctive all around than Dunn was coming out of college. I haven't watched enough of Halliburton to know though. This team sorta needs a smart player that can fill in the gaps. Halliburton MIGHT be that type of guy.

Edit:

All the mock drafts I just looked at had Vassell in the top 10.

I think your assessment of Halliburton is spot on. Sometimes we get caught up on the flash or athleticism we see in highlight footage. But I like to come back to the numbers. Halliburton's stats speak for themselves: 50.4% from the field, 42% from behind the arc, 6.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals as a sophomore. That's the kind of productivity in key stat areas that tells me he's going to be a very good NBA player. And that's before considering his reputed 7'0 wingspan.

I read an article about he is a hard worker smart great leader etc. His college coach Steve Prohm dropped a Flip quote about PGs. :) Can't wait for Nebraska to move back to the Big 12 so Hoiberg can face his old school a couple times a year. Lol
