That's always been in his bag. I'm glad there's been growth in recognizing that, but it's a little late in his career.

I'll also add that the Timberwolves can't afford for Russell to shrink himself into a low usage player. Not only does he need to keep himself in rhythm, but it's his ability to score AND create opportunities for teammates that makes him an affective ball-handler. They need him to take shots and present himself as a scoring threat, which he is. Reducing him to a Tyus Jones or Lonzo Ball on that end is gross mismanagement of his individual skills and would likely have an adverse impact on the team.

By the way, his usage rate was 25.1 last season. The league average for point guards last season was 21.5. He's right where he should be given his responsibilities. Thankfully, the Timberwolves acquired an elite screen-setter and rim-roller in Rudy Gobert that will assuredly open up even more passing lanes for Russell. As long as Russell stays relatively healthy and regresses back to the three-point shooter he's been the last handful of years, especially off the catch, then he should be in line for a really good campaign. All the pieces are in place for him.

While I don't think he should be at a Tyus Jones level of usage, I do think he should be closer to a Chris Paul or Mike Conley level of usage or around 20%. I think if it's higher than that (like last year) it will be at the expense of others who are more likely to be more efficient than him. But yeah, if he has wide open floaters and mid-range jumpers created by Rudy sucking in the defense, I have no problem with him taking those shots. Same thing with catch and shoot 3's. But the fast break pull up 3s and leaning contested mid-range jumpers have to go. No need for him to take those shots anymore.

I wonder if DLO's desire for a large contract could conflict with the team goals. I agree, we need him to run the offense and make our other players better. His usage should definitely go down. I can't see him getting a large extension from us, so he's going to be auditioning for other teams. Regardless, most players do pretty well in a contract year. Watch Kyrie ball out this year.

I expect D. Russell to have his best season.

Possibly related, it's a contract year.

I'll remind everyone that Russell took less shots as the season went on last year and that was also when the Wolves offense was really taking off. Now he won't be throwing nifty passes to bad hands Vanderbilt and Jordan McLaughlin (ok hopefully we still see some of those plays between McLaughlin and Russell!) he will be tossing the ball to one of the most efficient players in the league in Gobert who is also a guy that plays to Russell's strengths as a player. If I'm Russell I can't wait to be throwing the ball to Gobert. In HS I LOVED playing PG with 2 of my classmates that I could just throw the ball to them around the paint and they scored. It was NOT on dunks though. lol

As for a contract for Russell it's worth noting that Ricky Rubio has made plenty of money being a passing PG. Obviously some of his value was also his defense but of course Russell has significantly more scoring and ability to be a threat on the perimeter too. The point is that if Russell plays well in some way shape or form he will get nice paycheck. Let's also remember Russell was a guy that averaged over 5 assists a game as a college freshman playing with another PG in the backcourt at Ohio State.

Yeah, I agree with monster above about how DLo is likely to respond in a contract year. Russell is a smart guy, and he must know how he is perceived around the league...plus, he is an elite passer. I suspect he knows his pathway to a big contract is through facilitating a terrific offense, and not through scoring 18 PPG with below average shooting efficiency. And if I'm wrong and DLo instead decides he needs to be a hero and score a lot of points on off-balance jump shots, I trust that Finchie will provide him with an escort to the bench. Let's hope DLo is as basketball savvy as I think he is, and he sees the beauty in working the PnR with Rudy and finding KAT/Ant/Jaden for open looks.

Okay, I recognize it's only been two games, but the stats also match my eye test when it comes to Gobert's impact on defense. From Chris Hines:

The Timberwolves have a 102.6 defensive rating when Rudy Gobert is on the floor. This would be 4th in the league.

They have a 121.2 defensive rating when he's off the floor. Would be the worst mark in the league.

Overall, their defensive rating is 15th (109.1)

Further, opponents score a remarkable 20.4 fewer points per 100 possessions when Rudy is on the court versus off. It's been fun to watch opponents start to drive to the bucket, only to swerve away when they see Gobert lurking. Conversely, it's been painful to see them score inside and out when Rudy's on the bench.

Unfortunately, I would argue much of Rudy's positive defensive stats in the first two games is due to OkC's terrible outside shooting. Both the Thunder and the Jazz had dozens of wide open shots (47 for OkC and almost as many for Utah) due to our horrendous perimeter defense, and the Thunder missed a high percentage of theirs. Had we been facing a team with average outside shooters in our opener, we would be 0-2 this season.

Finchie said it in his post-game presser, and several of us have said it here...it's imperative that we do something to prevent wide-open outside shots. Cool said it well in another thread...the presence of Rudy under the basket should empower his teammates to play tighter and not worry about getting beat off the dribble. But DLo, Nowell, Ant, KAT and Forbes have been terrible on the perimeter, and Finchie needs to hold them accountable. I don't see this as a system issue, because certain players (Prince, Anderson, JMac, Jaden) have looked reasonably effective to me in guarding the perimeter. SloMo is out tonight with back spasms, but I'm looking for more minutes tonight from Prince and Rivers if the poor perimeter defense continues.
