2022 Off-Season Around the League
Re: 2022 Off-Season Around the League
Woj is reporting the Jazz are listening to offers for Mitchell. I usually take that (it's my speculation when reports like this come out) as some team/s have offered something that the organization has to at least contemplate. If they deal Mitchell do they do a complete fire sale? Bogdonovic? Beverly? Conley? Clarkson? They already moved Royce O'Neal for a first.

I think Windhorst first called the Jazz fire sale.
Ainge's track record + hiring an unproven coach for FIVE seasons...

I think a lot of people foresaw the Utah Jazz rebuilding, especially after the Royce O'Neale trade -- not just Brian Windhorst. His moment on TV makes for great meme content, though.
Apparently, Utah has made every veteran on their roster available. I think we can expect Donovan Mitchell to be moved. Bojan Bogdanovic should garner interest as well.

Ayton has now signed the max offer sheet with the Pacers. The Suns are now unable to sign and trade him. Talk about screwing this up.

Re: 2022 Off-Season Around the League
Deandre Ayton agreed to a four-year, $133-million offer sheet with the Indiana Pacers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
That's an absolute score for Ayton and his representation. I think that's a ballsy move for the Pacers.
What does that mean for Myles Turner? He was already available. Would Phoenix try to work out a sign-and-trade? Will Indiana package him with or without Buddy Hield and trade them for value? Would Los Angeles trade Russell Westbrook and a future first-round pick for Turner and Hield? This off-season is far from over.

Adrian Wojnarowski noted that Deandre Ayton had NOT signed his offer sheet yet, but rather agreed to it. You are correct that a sign-and-trade would be off the table once he signs.

Re: 2022 Off-Season Around the League
Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Phoenix will match the offer sheet to Deandre Ayton.
Ayton's new deal will push the Suns approximately $15-million into the luxury tax. That's tough. I didn't see Kevin Durant ending up in Phoenix anyways, but I have to imagine this takes them completely out of those talks.

Thank you for the clarification. Apparently Ayton will have a 1 year no trade clause also
Re: 2022 Off-Season Around the League
I just don't see the Suns matching this offer in spite of what the typically reliable Woj reported. Matching the offer would impose a huge luxury tax hit on the Suns' typically cheap owner. A sign-and-trade involving Myles Turner would seems to make sense. However, Indiana has the cap room to absorb all of Ayton's salary and they would presumably like to use Myles Turner as an asset in another deal. So stay tuned. This will be interesting. How about trading Gobert to the Suns in a sign-and-trade for Ayton and two future unprotected 1st-round picks? :). Or maybe trade do a three way with Gobert going to the Pacers, Ayton to the Wolves and Myles Turner to the Suns with a couple future picks coming back to Minnesota? Just kidding of course. But I couldn't help myself. :)
Re: 2022 Off-Season Around the League
However, the Knicks are not the only team interested in Mitchell. The Miami Heat have been interested in both Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell over recent weeks. But their stable of young pieces and picks simply isn't as attractive as New York's. The Heat have traded their 2025 first-round pick away, meaning that they can only offer their 2023 pick, their 2027 pick, and their 2029 pick, along with pick swaps in the other years. The Heat also have a deficit of young players compared to New York. 22-year-old Tyler Herro is a good piece, but Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, and Omer Yurtseven are older and on shorter contracts than their key Knicks' counterparts. - via Salt Lake Tribune
The Knicks got their guy, Brunson, as a free agent. And they actually signed him to a pretty reasonable contract. They re-signed their talented young big, Mitchell Robinson. Now it looks like they're in hot pursuit of Donovan Mitchell via trade. I'll be really upset if the Knicks get Donovan Mitchell for less than what the Wolves gave up for Gobert. Miami is also pursuing Donovan, but they just don't have the draft capital or bevy of young talent to compete with the Knicks. I think it's absolutely clear that Utah is moving into full rebuild mode. I think it's equally clear that the Knicks are attempting to put together a young team that can win now and in the future. Mitchell would be a great addition to their team with Brunson if they're able to keep Mitchell Robinson and RJ Barrett.
The Knicks have a massive collection of future draft picks. They have their own pick in each of the next seven years. They also have: (1) the Mavs' 2023 pick, which they will undoubtedly get next year since it's only top 10 protected; (2) Detroit's 2023 1st-round pick, which is lottery-protected but becomes less protected each year down to top 9 protected in 2027; (3) Washington's 2023 1st-round pick, which is lottery protected but becomes less protected each year down to top 8 protected in 2026; (4) the more favorable of either Utah's or Cleveland's 2024 2nd-round pick (Utah's will likely be a very high 2nd rounder); (5) Detroit's 2024 2nd-round pick; (6) Milwaukee's 2025 1st-round pick only top 4 protected; and (7) Nets' 2025 2nd-round pick. The only picks of their own they won't have over the next seven years are their 2023, 2024 and 2026 2nd-round picks. With all those draft assets and young roster talent like Toppin and Quickley, I have no doubt the Knicks will get Donovan Mitchell if they really want him and they'll be able to do it without giving up Brunson, Mitchell Robinson or RJ Barrett.
