Culver seems to be getting a lot of love from the board but his win share rating was in negative figures last year. Lower than Naz, Nowell and a host of other Timberwolves who simply can't play.
I'm guessing Edwards is the first or 2nd off the bench from the get-go, and ends up starting by mid-season.
Why does Edwards need PT in your eyes, but not Culver? Both are inexperienced high draft picks that have positives and negatives within their games. It makes little sense to abandon Culver's development but in the same breath continue to invest in Edwards.
For the reason I gave above. Culver was terrible last year and has a very low ceiling. Let's hope Edwards isn't another Culver.

Because Culver was a negative as a rookie? That's the overwhelming majority of rookies every year. And then in the following years some of them develop into better players -- rotation players, starters, and All-Stars. But they need meaningful minutes to get there. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any team in the league that would give up on a first-rounder after their rookie season.
Edit: I get that you and some others here are not high on Culver, and I can understand that to a degree. My stance is that we still don't fully know what he is yet as an NBA player, therefore he requires playing time.
I wasnt high on Culver last year but still thinks he needs a chance to play. Hes got length at the wing and seems like he has the potential to shoot the 3 better than Okogie.
I do think taking his 20 games of average play and extrapolating that to anything beyond a 6th or 7th man is optimistic. Unfortunately for us a 6th or 7th man for most teams could be a starter.
khans2k5 wrote:Beasley just shouldn't be starting. He's a 6th man scoring punch. We can't afford to give up big leads right out of the gate because D'Lo/Beasley/Okogie/Layman/Towns has 1 defender in that unit. Then we are climbing uphill all game with the bench unit being mostly defenders who aren't great offensive players trying to cut into leads to get the starters back in the game. Get Culver and Okogie out there to make life difficult on the opposing wings early and rely on Russell/Towns to be the offense with Culver as a secondary creator and Layman as a stretch 4. Get Ricky in for Okogie early (6 minute mark) and Beasley/Edwards/RHJ can come in for D'Lo/Culver/Layman around the 8-10 minute mark. Then Davis starts the second for Towns and D'Lo/Culver come in for Ricky and the worse of Beasley/Edwards at the 2-4 minute mark in the 2nd quarter. That leaves us only 2-4 minutes a half with neither Towns nor D'Lo on the court with Ricky running the 2nd team offense and we can have balanced units rather than starting 4 offensive players and bringing in 3 defensive players off the bench when your two best offensive players aren't playing with them. Culver was drafted to be that defender and secondary ball handler next to a guy like Russell so let him play there. Bringing 32 million dollars off the bench in the backcourt is Rosas' fault for being a shitty team builder, but that's what's going to be best for the team to compete in games.

I don't disagree that he needs to play at all. But Edwards should get more time and I'm betting he will

I would guess 20-24 mins avg, between the 2 and 3. I think that will be perfect.

As everyone knows, I was really unhappy with the Culver pick last year and I've never been particularly high on his potential. Nevertheless, I thought he played well enough down the stretch and showed enough talent last season to merit significant minutes this preseason and early regular season so the Wolves can fully evaluate him and see how much he improved his game between the beginning of last season and the beginning of this one. Most players take a big step forward between their rookie season and second season. Having used the 6th pick in last year's draft plus another asset (Saric) to get Culver, it's essential that the Wolves give themselves every opportunity to know what they have in him. Edwards isn't going anywhere and there's plenty of time in the 72 games this season and 82 games next season (along with practices) to develop and evaluate him. The time is now for Culver and the Wolves had better figure out what they have in him and what role he can play.
Lip, wouldn't you agree that Culver's ceiling is a lot lower than what we hoped it would be at the beginning of last season? If not, I'm willing to listen to reasons why he could justify his draft position.

Cool - I never thought Culver had a particularly high ceiling, which is why I wasn't happy with the pick. So I never thought and still don't think he was worthy of the 6th pick.
However, I actually liked him more after watching him a lot with the Wolves than I did when we drafted him. So I see some potential that needs to be explored. Don't get me wrong, I don't think his ceiling is nearly as high as Edwards' ceiling and I still have serious doubts about Culver. However, Rosas obviously saw something in him that inclined him to take him at #6. And then they actually used that high high lottery pick on him. So I just think it's incumbent upon this organization to give Culver every chance this season to vindicate their faith in him. Otherwise, it's a wasted pick and I'm tired of this organization wasting and misusing assets.
