Yeah. I'm not discounting Zion in any way.
I'm just pointing out that one year the #2 pick very quickly shows he could very well be a superstar... or at least a difference maker.
And other years, even the top pick in the draft (or the best player) isn't nearly as recognizable for awhile.

- KAT looked engaged and didn't whine much. Good enough for me. The shots will fall eventually.
- Edwards looked completely lost. I agree with Cool. He seemed to lack any feel for what to do out there when it didn't involve a pull-up jumper. Not good.
- Layman was fine, but it is NOT a good sign if he ends up being our best 4 this season. That isn't going to cut it.
- Nowell has to stick around. That kid plays with poise and is pretty damn smooth. He's not a terrible defender either. I'd argue he may have a ceiling higher than Beasley, who continues to look like a gunner and that's it.
- Defense tightened up after the first quarter.
- It's going to be painful seeing Edwards force-fed minutes this season at the expense of Culver/Okogie/Nowell potentially.
- Our G-League team could be pretty damn good! Similar to last season, I may end up watching more of the Iowa squad.
- I'll have to give Vanderbilt a pep talk.
Culver looks miles better than Edwards based on this game. Edwards needs a lot of work. I was going to post the same thing as you. He looked lost, hesitant, slow at times and didn't know what to do on either end. Meanwhile Culver even if he missed a couple bunnies looked fluid, plays long and was engaged in the right positions.
If Culver can up his 3P% he's going to be a solid player, I don't see the light for Edwards at the end of the tunnel. Needs 2-3 years of development.

Personally I thought Edwards was about what I expected good and bad. I didn't come away feeling more negative about him as a player after this game but that's just my perspective.

He was definitely nervous and over thinking just about everything. After 10-15 regular season games if he still looks that tentative Im going to be a lot more skeptical.

Yep, so much overreaction to 1 preseason game. If we did everything off 1 preseason sample size Kat would be he of the worst shooters in the NBA.
Not saying Edwards will be an all nba player but damn a lot of overactions to a preseason game

I was hoping for better but he was pretty much as expected. I don't think many of us think he's going to be good right away, so it was about par for the course.

Anybody else think Ed Davis looks like a guy who used to use a lot of steriods but then quit?
Seriously, he looked a bit like a mini DeAndre Jordan at Portland, and now he looks like a skinny Noah Vonleh.

That is awesome Tim. Good stuff (I mean the humor, not the fish oil. Yuck!)

Yeah, I'm sure he'll get better, but when a guy has got it, you can tell right away and he doesn't need excuses made for him. And Dlo as a max player? You better be harden on offense if you're that bad on defense. This team depresses me. I already liked culver a lot, and adding all that muscle will only help him. Knowing this organization, we'll probably him next week for Jaunchos brother (7 mil... are you freaking kidding me?)... anyone who's optimistic about this team is on some better drugs than me.
I take fish oil...

- It's interesting how you can spot some guys instantly simply by how they're moving. Nowell came out with energy. He was moving with purpose. Maybe a sort of confidence? Even if he wasn't hitting shots, his level of play was noticeable.
- Hey Q... maybe Jeff Adrien can come back for you? It looked like Vanderbilt had never been on a basketball court before. Jumping at the wrong time, running around aimlessly, just... well... looking lost.
[Note: And sometimes in the NBA... it just comes down to luck. Morant was a distant 2nd in the 2019 draft. And... damn... he's so very good. He plays with purpose/energy/conviction/"it"... it's palpable.]
So Vanderbilt had a bit of an off night. I'm calling him tonight, he and I are going through some film together, we're getting him a new emotional support animal, and we'll start with a clean slate. All good!

Ah, give us some breathing room here. There is always over-reaction to any game just on the heels of that game. People tend to level out within 24-48 hours. One only needs to read the archives of Lip's game reports to see a historical record of this phenomena, LOL.
