Shams:

Sources: Free agent center Greg Monroe plans to sign a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards on Thursday. Monroe is finishing up a 10-day contract with the Timberwolves today.

Well, that sucks. I think there was a place for Moose on this team. Minnesota just didn't and wouldn't find the money for him. Not a huge loss, but the Wolves need another big now. Put it on the shopping list.

He helped the wolves win a game that was huge! At the end of the day he is probably going to get more playing time with the Wizards if they are going through Covid instead of being the 3rd/4th big on the Wolves roster. I get it from his perspective. Still would be nice to have a Monroe type player in case of foul trouble or injuries to our bigs.

It goes back to this past summer, where Rosas didn't land a legit backup big, which could have been done at a very reasonable price at the time. Vando's terrific play as the starting 4 has helped, but we still could use a big that can set wide screens and hold his ground in the paint on defense against teams with giant Centers.

Maybe this has been covered already on this board but I was reading today that if you are signing guys because you had players out due to Covid those contracts may not count against the cap. That could matter in terms of the Wolves actually signing someone a few weeks from now if they want to.

For Monroe he made over $138,000 for his Wolves 10 day contract. If he goes somewhere else and plays well even (in a league that I assume still doesn't value bigs too highly) he might get a regular vet min contract this year maybe even from the Wolves. Till that happens if all he gets is a few more 10 day contracts...I don't think he is gonna complain in terms of making some decent money. He is also getting a shot which is probably all he wants along with a bunch of other guys some who have also been out of the league for a while.

Personally I've always liked Monroe. He is a guy with a nice skill set but isn't quite special enough that teams valued him over other options. I'd like him to have stayed or someone like him but from my perspective I'm not sure I would risk going over the salary cap to sign someone like that especially if you aren't sure you are actually gonna play them. Having not watched games for weeks and looking at the stats for the team...it looks like there are a few places they could theoretically use someone competent.

One injury away from wishing he is back on the team, while I'll agree we didn't need him now. I will say we just let a guy with decent skills slip through our hands.
